Well in my quest to try to get my 840av working. I went back to the 10$ section at the computer store to see what other 040 macs they had. I saw a Centris 650 and a Quadra 650 side by side. I looked inside the Centris and it had a surface mounted CPU. But the Quadra didn't. Not only that, it was in PRISTINE condition. There was another Q650 on the bottom of the stack with a CD but it wasn't so clean so I decided I had plenty of CD-Rom drives anyway.

So I took it home and it booted right up clean install of 7.6 and had 24MB ram and a 230 MB drive. So out comes the CPU and I dropped it in to the 840av. But sadly same symptoms. No chime. I took the 40Mhz cpu from the 840av and put it in the 650 and it worked fine at 33Mhz. (Time to chip it I think!) I gathered all the ram from the 840av and it worked fine in the 650. But I had an idea... I've got a Dell PowerEdge 6100 server with 1GB of ram, so I dropped in a single 64MB simm and it worked. So later I'll try all 64mb simms and see what happens. Looks like I've found a cheap hobby. Funny thing is how fast this system feels. I don't remember 33Mhz computers (or 133mhz ones for that matter being this fast). Also the VRAM is maxed out :)

Since it is so quick feeling I'd like to Max out the rest of it. I've got a 36GB 10,000 RPM drive here that needs a home.. Chances of it working? I've got a myriad of other scsi drives as well. What am I likely to get working on it?

Damn. I want one of their Color Classics, but they want 149,159, and 229 for the 3 that they have. :( They have a 180Mhz tower for only $99.

They've got quite a few cheap power macs. Does anyone know if any of the power macs took regular Simms versus the hideous odd dimms?

The first generation PowerMacs (6100/7100/8100) and clones all use 72-pin SIMMs. They are the only PPC's that don't use DIMMs.

Keep looking for a CC! I got mine from a thrift store for $20!

Run A/UX on the Quadra! It takes a bit of hacking, but A/UX should run well on the Q650, assuming it has a full 040.

Not only that, I have 256mb of ram in it now. AUX sounds like a good idea. Now to figure out why it freezes when I connect my Syquest 270mb drive to it. My SE doesn't, it worked just fine..

If I do find a cheap cc. I'll be awefully tempted to make it a 6360av CC.

So the Centris 650 has a SMT CPU? I think that I should get one for my 540c.

Well if you think you're up to soldering 9 zillion little wires, then go for it. But I think the Centris has an LC instead of a full 040

Actually, it does have a full '040. However, not all C650s have a SMT CPU. We have 2 C650s at the Shop, both with built in ethernet, and they have socketed '040s.

Edit - I just remembered that I once saw a LC/Performa 580 mobo with an SMT CPU. It was soldered onto some little board that was only a cm bigger than the CPU itself, which fit into a standard '040 socket. It was sorta weird. Maybe you might have luck finding one of those. All the other 580s i've seen though have been standard socket type ones.
