I'm getting a 520c but the problem is that the 520c does not have a FPU so is there a way to replace the proc in the pb with the one in the 700?-danny

Sure, if you've got the rare SMT revision 700 mobo and you can manage to get the proc off without borking it. If you're stuck with the more common socketed PGA package 040 board layout, you're outta luck, but you could search the phrase "sharp knife" in posts here by alien to get some good ideas. jt ™. I wanted to this to my 540c. Processor change, spoof the gestalt, and install A/UX! Time to make some friends in high places in EE department, methinks. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

Oops! needed to be sillier, I guess. Everything but the last sentence was a joke!Look up alien's post on how to swap in a surface mount 040. I don't think any desktop Mac ever used one and you probably couldn't get it off without wrecking it anyway if you could find one in anythng. You'll need to buy a new SMT CPU somewhere if you wanna do a brain transplant. jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

Maybe you could find a PGA socket that you could surface mount onto the daughterboard?~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

does anyone know if Morotola still manufactures the 680x0 seried processors? if so, mebbie all us army members could pool together to scrounge up enough for the minimum order, and do brainswaps on all of our FPUless macs, or put faster processors in the '030 based macs :)just a thjought.. There are plenty of adapters to get surface mount to work with thru-hole sockets and boards, but there are often voltage issues. It should be possible to fabricate an sdapter if there is actually that much room available, but I doubt it would be withing the power and cooling budget tolerances to use a full blown desktop CPU I, the heat spreader wouldn't work, that's for sure.Email alien and ask where he got his SMT 040, I'm sure they're available somewhere in sample quantities. there was mention on fritter of a miracle product for desoldering SMT IC's. You actually might be able to remove a full 040 from a PCB without destroying it. Were they used in any kind of equipment that is available for CHEEEEEEEEEEP? Maybe an 040 accelerator card or a printer or scanner logic board, maybe a Telecom switch or something? jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

Actually, one time at the Shop i saw a Performa 580 with an SMT CPU. It was a standard 580 mobo with a '040 socket, but instead of a standard PGA '040, there was a little board that was about as big as the socket, with an SMT '040 soldered onto the top of it. It was sorta weird... -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6
