I have a variation of the checkerboard problem on a Classic II. Additionally to the usual checker pattern, there is also vertical line about 1/8" large with color contrasting with the background checkerboard (the vertical line is black when passing over a white square and vice-versa. There is also horizontal smudge also alternating with the background square. It is really hard to describe, but here is a photo (sorry for the bad quality it is a cap from a Hi8 camera) :

I noticed on the cap near the flyback transformer on the analog board seem a bit loose. It is also quite tilted ont side. Since the cap is cover with a rubber sleeve that dried and glue, it is hard to tell. Since I am a bit afraid of getting zapped I don't want to play too much with it. Here is a photo of the offending capacitor :

Thanks for your help, I'll take any tip that could help save that poor Classic !

I think a checkerboard display is usually caused by a dead battery. Did you check that?

Does anybody have the schematic for the Classic II analog board ? I plan on ether resoldering or replacing the loose. I would also look at other potential problem on the analog board. Thanks !

Again, this is *EXTREMELY* common, you either have badly seat ram or ram card or a component on the mb has gone south. I've seen it HUNDREDS of times over the years.

Again, an analog board problem isn't going to cause a nice, regular (digital) checkerboard display. You may indeed have an analog problem, too, but fix the checkerboard problem first. It's on the logic board.
