Apple II forever! Fast, efficient, expandable, and never crashing! AppleSoft BASIC in ROM, almost instant booting and launching of programs... Have computers before or since equaled the combined efficiency, ease of use, and stability of these wonderful machines?

My IIgs is still my preferred machine for simple school papers. When I want to play games, my extensive library serves me well.

Who else loves their Apple II?

maclover5, is it the logic board that's dead, or the CPU? The logic boards hard to ship/replace, but the CPU is much easier...get what I'm hinting at? ;)

Tallgeese, while my IIgs is indeed a powerfull beast, it has been supplanted by a PowerMac 7500, and sent to a friends :( But when I feel in a retro mood, I fire up my trusty //c, as it's compact enough to store in my cramped room, and also has a built in disk drive, minimizing clutter. Nothing like fiddling with AppleSoft BASIC or playing Lemonade or LoadRunner!

of course it'll boot into AppleBasic fine...but then if you want to load up a game (specifially a 5 1/4 floppy) it takes forever

Actoully, compared to other computers of the time, the Apple II's drive was pretty fast. Have you ever had the, ah, pleasure of loading programs from the disk on a Commodore 64? SSSlllllloooowwwww!!! The C128 improved this some, but it was still sorta slow.

And, when you take into account the fact that it is booting up when you insert the disk and flip it on (or hit openapple-control-reset) it positively flies! If you only intend to play one game, or use one app for a while, it is still faster than booting up your Mac, watching the extension parade, firing up ClarisWorks, etc. That's why AppleWorks 3.0 is still my preferred short paper engine.

Of course, this is not to say that they die easily. My band teacher had a beige //e in his office without a top, the insides were filled with dust, dirt, and cigarette leavings, and I was still able to fire i up and play with BASIC. He didn't let me take the paddles, though...

I crashed my ][+ ONCE. I was playing solitaire and I hit the desk the computer was on hard. The computer wouldn't respond to anything until I reset it.

I'm more of an early Apple fan (][, ][+). Don't need no stinkin' lowercase or Apple keys!

Absolutely love my original IIe - I even still have the box from the day I carted it home from my local Apple dealer. As for reliability, it's the best. Expandability? Better now than ever! I can go buy all those rare, hard-to-find cards at Goodwill for a buck or two... (Latest find: an original IIe mouse with card and software, still shrinkwrapped with $199 price tag! - Got it for 50 cents...) It's got the job of running my house lights and appliances while I'm away, courtesy of an X-10 interface (of which I bought two for $15).

Unfortunately, my II+ died in a non-computer fire some years ago; it was serial numbered under 5000 though.

Nice to see others here still keeping the 8-bits alive!

I remember having papers done on a Apple II. Did fine for that.

And if your into writing BASIC programs, they're fun for that. And there exists tons of interesting programs for them

People did alot of experimenting with those computers, beucase no one had decided a computer should just do office apps, games, web and graphics. Check around for programs, you'll find interesting ones out there.
