A ways back, I picked up a "Macintosh II accelerator and adaptor" off of eBay for $10. All I could tell is that it was Daystar and was pulled from a II.

When I got it, I looked - a universal powercache, 40Mhz with the FPU. I stuck it on the pile to play with later.

Today I "found" it again, and decided to try it in one of the II's. I downloaded the "Power Central" control panel and transferred it to the II that had IIx ROMs and both 800K and 1.4 floppies. I popped out the 16MHz '020, and the Apple MMU. Then I put the adaptor board in (it plus into both the CPU and MMU sockets), plugged in the Daystar board, and booted up.

Success! The control panel reported a 40MHz CPU (as expected) with 32K of cache and the FPU. A quick run with speedometer gave me a reading (under 7.1) of 70% of a Q605 for CPU, 400% for FPU, 106% for disk (using a 5.25" 160M drive!), and 50% on video. (Not surprising on that last score, it's the "high res" 8-bit 640x480 card. I'll try something with a bit more speed later.)

Cool find for $10, methinks. I now have a "stock" Mac II, and one that is *way* faster than originally intended.

Why 6.0.7? Why not 6.0.8?

(I'll be happy to. I'd love to compare that to my accelerated IIfx, which should really rock System 6. )
