Well, i think this might have been discussed before, I can't remember. I was thinking tonight that we need to discuss a gameplan for some serious advertising of the 68kmla. I have a few thoughts in mind.

1) The more people we get the easier it could be to get ads and money for hosting.

2) the more the merrier

3) We are an awesome mac community that I think a lot of people are not aware of.

4) It's not that hard to do, if you find a 68k site that's still updated, just drop the owner a line about us. I would doubt they would have a problem and might join in the fun. Hotline servers are also where i adverstise the forums.

5) if we could do it in an organized way so it's not spamming, but a personal message from us, i think that could get some traffic.

this is in NO way a complaint of what the forum is now, but i think it could be something that would be worth the little bit of work.

I'm opening this up for discussion. Please share your thoughts. I think it would be awesome to be one of the the lists where everybody goes for mac info, like everymac, lowendmac, etc.

You realize of course that 'low-end Macs', for instance, are a moving target. After a couple of years, the current DPs will be 'low end' (never mind that some people say they already are!), so the population of interested users will continue to expand. But as the era of 68K Macs recedes into the past, the population of those who treasure them (not to mention the population of 68Ks themselves, those that have been saved from landfills) will be diminishing. My SEs still run, but they won't run forever.

That said, evangelize away! (I've mentioned the Army whenever the opportunity arose, and I've tried to buy T-shirts, but ~Coxy doesn't like going to the bank. )

I totally understand the whole issue of them dying out ( i don't use any of my 68ks currently), but there is still a significant number of people that are all spread out around the net that i think, with a little effort, could be collected and use the mla as a central focal point. for example gamba. What's up with that dude?! why isn't he here? just a thought and example. I think it would be a good time that we try doing this asap before the community starts to die off along with the machines.

First off, shouldn't this be in the General 68KMLA News & Stuff forum?

Secondly, I wholeheartedly agree that we should begin some sort of advertizing campaign. The forums are close to one year old, and are well established. It's time to get the word out to increase traffic to here and our site.

I doubt that we will remain the 68K Mac Liberation Army forever, but we will someday encompass outer Macs as well... who knows... we may become the Pre-G3 Mac Liberation Army in a few years time...

All good points. I've also been thinking about what you said, Z, about the "Pre G3 Mac liberation Army"...already poor 6100s and other 601 based Macs are being thrown out, and executed in other ways.

Wasn't there a Mac 'ring' of websites, each maintaining links to all the others? Does this still exist (I don't get around much)? If so, that would be a good first step: join the ring.

Also, how about posting links to other sites on the Forum pages? Too cluttered? Have one and have it change every 30 seconds or so. Or, provide a link directly to the Links page on the MLA website. And then approach the others about links to MLA.

I put the 68kmla name down everywhere I can. Somepeople like it, somepeople don't *cough* MAF *cough*. I'm willing to go for anything as long as it isnt "switch" ads. (although, one or two WOULD be hilarious to do! )

Here's an idea: MOST of us live near Metropolitan areas. In each of those areas, there is a small, usually free, tabloid-type, computer oriented newspaper distributed weekly or monthly. Advertising rates for these papers is usually low for 1/8th column ads.

We should organize and set up some ad copy that could be put into these small ads. Membership may rise, and local battalions could be established.

I don't know...just a thought.

A NON electronic way of advertising??

No really, I do like that idea a lot. Along this same topic, we could set up some sort of "68k donation hotline" thing or something. I mean, we are *pretty* widespread, so if we advertise in papers as being a place for 68k people, or a place that will take those old 68ks off of you, I'm sure there would be people in both catagories.

I believe that PayPal has a donation thing that you can sign up for, check out the website for more info.
if we got a surplus of donations, more than would pay for hosting, where would they go? to members that can prove that they have a lot of macs to liberate in their local area, or summat? have the bankholder make out a check payable to the place where the liberation is to be made?
just a thought...

BTW, do you think it would be a good idea to register as a nonprofit corporation in the US so people would be more inclined to donate, for a tax deduction? also register www.68kmla.org?
