Danny Ricci wrote in telling us(copied from MacRumors.com),

"It's final, Universal is going to release CDs that can only be played on some newer stereo systems and Windows-based PCs. There is no support for Macs, DVD Players, and some CD players. Microsoft must have paid them big bucks for this, (although Windows users won't be able to rip eather, just play). See the SiliconValley.com article. Time for Apple users to unite and lead a boycott, remember, as always, We Shall Provail."

Boycott indeed. There is no way that any of us here at Macrumors will ever purchase Universal CD's again unless this protection is removed. The notion...buying a CD and not immediately importing it into iTunes as MP3's--lunacy. We certainly hope that all the Mac faithful out there (or PS2 faithful, or...) will follow suit.

Heres The Link to the forums that has the article and us mac users response to this. This is not a rumor because i watched the story on The ScreenSavers and on TechTV Live.

Don't boycott them, just return any CD that won't work as defective. If they're not working as they should, that is what they are.Go to Top of Page

Most music stores, once the CD is unwrapped, won't give you your money back, only a replacement CD.

I know that I'd MUCH rather buy a CD and return it tho. It makes the music store hurt, which makes them complain to the company.

Pay with a credit card. Return the CD saying it doesn't work.

But wouldn't that be more of an inconvenience for you rather than them?

They HAVE to accept it back, since it's defective.

Have they started doing it yet?

I got a CD for christmas, the latest volume of So Fresh, and obviously the first thing i did was go into my room and shove it into my LC630. Anyway as i was using my Mac, i was looking at the back of the CD case and saw that it had been sold under Universal Music Australia's label, but had also been created by Sony Music Australia and BMG. At this time, i remembered what TiMacLover said about Universal CDs, and then thought that they haven't started yet. However, as i've been playing it on more CD players around the house, depending what room i'm in, i've found some problems.

What works:

LC630
iMac
1999 model TEAC CD player
AppleCD 300 (caddy loading)

What doesn't:

My PowerBook 1400
Dad's 1992 Sony HiFi

On my 1400, both CDs (this is a 2 CD compilation) pause quite often, like as if it was an MP3, even when the Mac is just sitting at the Finder, doing nothing but playing the CD

On Dad's Sony, both CDs skip like crazy...maybe i might consider moving the 630 or the iMac out into the living room...

Just thought you might like to know

[Edited to add AppleCD 300...but i still think its ironic that a CD that Sony participated in making won't work properly on a Sony CD player...]

Hmm, don't they have CDs that clean the CD players they're in? If so, you might want to try that on your dad's sony and your 1400

SuperMegaUltraBump™

This post is to say that the American Pie 2 Soundtrack will NOT work in a PowerCD at all. I tried it a few days ago.

(as free as a dictatorship run by me can be) ((which is freer than you'd think))

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/techreviews/2002/1/18/cd-row.htm

I've found similar references at a number of places, and from all I've gathered, this is what power we have so far: If a CD has no warning label about not working in some players that comply to the CD standard, or has the CD Audio label when the copy-protection steps outside the standard, it is not actually a CD. Stepping outside the standard, I believe, includes not being playable on any player that is designed as compliant to those standards.

In other words, if the CD has the label and won't work on a player, or has no warning about the copy-protection and it won't work, you can return it as defective, open or not. Technically the store could be liable for false advertising if someone really wanted to be spiteful.

If you wanna be really nasty, hook up a basic 1/8mm stereo cable or RCA cables and rip the CD that way, then return it.

What you are experiencing is an older anti-computer CD feature -- the intentional recording of glitches in the music. The recording company puts errors in the data that don't effect most audio players but do tend to make CD-ROM drives quite cranky. Sony was a known user of this trick and Sony CD-ROM drives were a known victim of it.

BTW, raising hell at the retailer will work. The retailer loses about a dollar or so in credit card company fees, plus labor, every time you return a CD for a refund. Music retailers are in bad enough shape without further irritating their customers. Don't boycott the new Universal CDs -- buy and return them.

buy and return them several times, each time with store credit, each time a different CD, each time ripping it the old-fashond way, like you did with LPs! fuahahahaha! I love RCA jacks.
