A used computer store near my house has just set up a $10 Mac section. I made 2 purchases an SE w/ 20mb HD and super drive OS6 (had numerous HD boot problems but went away after updating the HD driver from a 7.0.1 HD setup disk.)

And a Quadra 840av. The SE was in pretty much good condition but this one had the HD and front drive covers removed. It had 2 SIMMS either 8 or 32mb (can't really tell)

So here are the symptoms. I press the power button (either keyboard or case doesn't matter) and the fan starts and the power light on the case lights up, but there is no chime and no video. I pulled the motherboard and removed the SIMMS and still the same thing. The power supply seems ok from what I can tell, I tested the drive cables and they had the 12 and 5 volts. I tested what appeared to be fuses behind the geoport and they registered zero ohms (full continuity)

The PRAM battery is totally dead, reading 0.04 Volts. I've never had a mac with a dead PRAM battery. Will that cause these symptoms?

Are there any other things you can think of for me to try?

Put the SIMMS back in, the 840av's got no mobo memory if you can believe AppleSpec, it's not passing the RAM test for some reason!

No luck. The simms are back in and still no chimes. I also tried powering on with a floppy and holding down the mouse button to see if it would eject, but nope.

Tried some different simms.. Same thing.

I'm pulling the old standbys out but did you try

zapping the PRAM?
hitting the CUDA switch (I can't remember if there is one)?
using a Nubus video card?

can you hear the hard drive spin up?
are the SCSI cables plugged in securely
will it boot from an external hard drive? CD-ROM?

Hope you can get it working

To reduce all possibilities, it has been reduced to a motherboard sitting on a table with the power supply. (this was my first attempt at troubleshooting it)

I don't have any video cards as all my macs have integrated video.
6360, SE FDHD, and this one
There is power to the drives but having them all disconnected doesn't do anything.

There are no switches other than the power switch.

I've got an AV card in my Performa 6360, but it only has 16mb ram and isn't much good for video. I've got plenty of 72 pin simms if I can ever get this 840av working.

Can't think of anything offhand, have you got a dishwasher?

If you're talking about the Video Slot card on the 6360, more RAM isn't gonna help at all, it's REALLY low grade consumer level VidCap equipment, but it's fun to play with. APCI card might work, but NuBus cards will mostly spank the 840av for all but special effects AFAIK. A 650 or something like my Radius 81/110 (8100) with a NuBus VicCap card will hold you over or even surpass the 840av for most VidCap playtime duties until you can collect all the extra parts and/or a new mobo, AFAIK.

Hmm. Well I've had a lot of luck with as-is equipment at this place before usually something simple, but this one might just be beyond repair.

As far as working things I've got a apparently good PS, no-grab floppy, 2 8mb simms.

The issue with the 6360 is that the video capture is choppy because I have to run virtual memory because I keep running out. I've even got the Avid software that came with the TV/Capture card, thought I could max out the 840av with ram and run 8.1 or 7.5.5. Got an IBM 36LZX 36GB 10K drive laying around looking for a home. It works in the 6360 but was a waste without something to install on it.

I might go hunting around at their other store. They have one about 20 miles away that should also have some 10$ Macs. Might happen upon another 840av.

Just a little thing I noticed, the symptoms remain the same even if the 040 chip is removed, so maybe the chip is bad. Can't think of anything else to try. I guess my next purchase will be another 040 machine.

Could it be missing the ROM SIMM? That could cause the symptoms you are describing...

My 840av has a rom simm, plugged in.

I think your computer is dead, ie: not the drives or ps, just the computer bit.

A long time ago, I used Atari st & ppl would replace chips & so on if they went faulty, but this just isnt cost effective(unless we apply for a grant from Apple) so the short answer is buy a new mobo.

Well considering I only paid $10 for the whole thing. I'll just pick up another 040 and steal the chip and see if that is it.

As far as slots, I've got 4 simm slots and 4 vsimm slots.

take EVERYTHING off of the Logic Board, and I mean EVERYTHING that is not soldered down, including processor. check for bent pins, then this may seem a little drastic, but run it under your sink, with the tap at full blast, do disloge all of the crud that may be on the LB, then find some distilled water (grocery store, get this BEFORE you start, they sell it for ironing) and make sure that it is not spring water, the label must say DISTILLED somewhere on it) and use it for the final rinse, this step gets rid of tap water, and because it has no minerals in it, it will not leave deposits on the board. after washing, lean the board up at an angle on some books or summat, and cover it with a box to keep the dust off it, and leave it in a warm place for a week. This will allow all of the moisture to evaporate from the board.
This has worked for me on several occasions with dead machines, and it is standard practice in the navy (except in the navy, they use an industrial dishwasher, IIRC)
YMMV with this, but what've you got to lose, if the new '040 does not work.
good luck

Yeah I've pulled everything off that could come off (simms and the cpu) the board itself is clean with no apparent damage.

I've had some conflicting information as to whether or not this board did have onboard memory, but I have determined that it does not. So I'm leaving the SIMMS in when testing now. There are no vsimms installed but that is ok since it already has onboard video memory.

Yeah I know about the steam water trick, it will be the last thing I do before comitting this tired old frigate to Davey Jones' locker. ;) It may be a week or two before I get access to another 040. I've got to go spend a week at Hurlburt AFB and install an ATC simulator there.

Heh, i remember back in the LCIII's Dark Ages (the 40 meg HD days, after the 80 megger died...eww), it used to have half as much RAM as it did HD space.

Yep, the one in Arlington. I haven't checked Irving yet. Only a year or so ago they wanted a few hundred for the 840av systems.

Yep, I am a Clancy fan, all though I dont get to read his stuff as much as I like. I have been working on the Bear and The Dragon for a year a half. Every time I start to read it something comes up and it gets put on the back burner.

The 800 works great 24MB ram 500 MB Hard Drive and it has the vram upgraded to 2MB. I paid 10 for this one so I think I did pretty good. I got the 840 with no drives or ram for 5 bucks so I did ok on it. There are some coils looking things by the Sound ports that look to be toasted. So it looks like it will be parts machine. The speaker came in handy sence I accedently put my hand through the one the 800 DOH!!
I am also hope that I can put the 40MHz chip from the 840 into the 800. I dont need the serial ports so I am hopeing that I can clock it up to 50 MHz or higher. Now just to find a Nubus Jackhammer card and for the 64MB of memory to come in and I will have one screaming machine.

Who would have thought that these old boxes could so much fun.

The Irving store does not have much Mac stuff. I was there last Saturday, and very little of the stuff have been marked down. In fact they wanted 29.95 for a USED AAUI adapter. Too bad that you got a bad one also.

If your looking to get another Quadra there is a 800 under the end of the table with all of the networking stuff next to the repair area at the Arlington store. There also is a SEHD there. If you can catch one of there drones in a good mood you might could get them to plug it in a see if it will chime.

Yes I saw those a few days ago. I would like one of those SGI's but waiting for the price to go down. Also since the Iris Indigos don't use PC keyboards I would have to find SGI keyboards. But there is an INDY there that can take a PC keyboard. I've got a few sparc stations here as well. I bought one , and IPC from there just because I was bored. I'd like to do something cool with all the junk I have....

I should really stop buying all of this junk so I can save up for an OSX capable system.

Buy the Indy! Those things work great for audio; IIRC, IRIX comes with a program called Trax that will do multitrack audio very well. They do video well also.

I would like an Indy, but the thing I worry about is getting an OS. I guess I'd have to buy it off of ebay or something. Unlike Sun, you can't just download Irix for home use. However the plus side on the indy, is I can pluck some more ram from my server that I don't really use, and I can use a PC keyboard / mouse on it.

Maybe late, but I read this thread a few times and the question 'does the hard disk spin up' seems to have no answer. A power supply without +5 volt output can cause no hard disk spin AND no difference whether CPU is in or out AND no difference whether RAM/ROM are in or out.
