Hi there,I am new to the forum. Sorry if I skip the presentation right now (I'll come back to it later) because I am at work right now and just and just need a quick info. At home, I have an original Mac SE without the SuperDrive. I also have a Mac Classic II which have a display problem. IIRC, the Classic II do have a SuperDrive. Can I use the Classic II SuperDrive in my SE ? Does it need any software to make it run, or I just need to plug it in and here I go ? FYI, the SE is running 6.0.5 The reason I am asking is that I don't have any other Mac on which I could write the 6.0.8 install disk to upgrade my SE. I do have a lot PC however, so if using the Classic floppy is not an option and you have a suggestion on how to write to 800K floppy from a PC, please go ahead. :wq |

It IS possible to use a SuperDrive in your SE, but first you need to install the later version of the SE ROMs, which included support for the SuperDrive.-------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

You also need to swap out the old floppy controller ASIC (IWM/Integrated Wozniak Machine?) with the SWIM/Super Wozniak Integrated Machine ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit - Apple's term for its custom VLSI packages, IIRC).jt ™. Thanks for the quick response, folk. I don't know the ROM version; how can I find out ? Also, can I take the SWIM from my classic and install it in the SE ?To give you a little more background, I plan on liberating the SE and eventually give it to my son. He love this machine. Recently, he was at my place playing WarCraft III on a PC and got bored. I showed him MacPaint on the SE and he played with it for a few hour ! The small monochrome did'nt seem to bother him very much. I was happy to see he is'nt stuck in this latest-and-greatest fixation that so many people seem to have. But in the meantime, I recently bought a used Apple Laserwriter IInt to use with one of my PC. It have ADB, LocalTalk and DB25 serial connector. Unfortunately, it does'nt seem to print from the serial port. I want to have a working Mac to test it with the LocalTalk connection. The SE is the only working Mac I have access to. According to what I found on the web, 6.0.8 include support for LaserWriter but 6.0.5 don't. I'll keep working on it. :wq |

Cool! When my High School Senior was a tyke, MacPaint on my FatMac at home and the SE in the shop was his introduction to computer games, he only discovered my subterfuge when he got into Primary School! Find a copy of SuperPaint, the rug rat was VERY excited when he "graduated" to using SuperPaint! IIRC, the IInt won't do serial, are you sure it hasn't been upgraded with a IIf logic board? The IIf doesn't do serial from a mac driver either, but it should do HP(?) mode from your PC if it's like the IIg board upgrade in my nt. If the SWIM in your other box is the same package, swap away, can't hurt, AFAIK. For ROM version, you could tell from the capacity of the ROM IC's or the size of the ROM image if you can read it and check it against the info on ROM sizes on gamba. Maybe TattleTech will run on your SE and give you the info you need, but if it has an 800k drive, I don't see why it would have the newer ROM. jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O.
