So I hooked up my duo to the internet & not only did it work well, I am convinced it was faster than my 840av!!!!!!!!!

when my duo is displaying the page, my 840av is whirring & I don't know what it is doing. I had assumed that Netscape 4.0.8 was to blame for not being able to read htm pages quickly, but my duo handled this bit & my 840av just whirrrs alot.

on my 840av I use :-

os 8.1

disk cache 96k

vram off

ram disk 1.5 meg (used for Netscapes cache)

When I had a working Duo 280c (*sniff*), it was faster than the 840av for web-browsing too, using the same browser (NS 4.0.8). I'm not sure what the explanation for this is, but I don't ever use my 840av for web browsing anyway, so it's no big concern.

Great to hear that you're having a good time with the 280c, even with the dodgy keyboard!

Edit - i meant 280c. I'm still obviously quite sad from the death of my dear PowerBook 180c.

All this seems to point to there being a problem with the spooling/rendering of data.

The duo 280c seems to do this better..........

what I thought of myself was if we could write a program that would "spool" the data from the modem & then "spoon feed" it to the web browser, this may help to oil the machinary.

Any 68k programmers want me to pay them £5 for making my Quadra work better?

God, I though I was imagining it as I noticed the same thing the last time I tried browsing on my 840AV.

My personal feeling is that it is some quirk of the 840AV as my 630 feels about the same as the Duo.

Does it have those infernal serial ports, the ones that hardly work at all?

Hehe, yeah, them's probably the culprits. Though, my experience was with Cable going through an AAUI/RJ-45 adapter to the onboard ethernet.

The geoports are present & being controlled by serialspeed.

I'm on the lookout for a 128k modem.
I want raid also.

Oi.

Most of the trouble with Netscape 4.0x and some Quadras seems to arise with 256 colors, using onboard video logic -- there's apparently some sort of bottleneck, and the situation may get even worse when the browser is attempting to render certain colors or patterns with extremely thin stripes.

As a side note, Netscape's graphic engine isn't probably the best or most compatible out there - the "waiting" is even worse when dealing with progressive JPEG code, compared to Quicktime and other software. It may also induce memory leaks, though I haven't tested the thing under 7.6.x, which reportedly fixes some of the problems.

My suspicions were confirmed after noticing that there wasn't any degradation in bandwith, both quality and quantity. The situation changed after plugging in a separate graphics card - average Apple stock - resulting in a noticeable improvement on my trusty old 700 (OS 7.5.5 with CFM-68K 4.0, and Open Transport).

Hope this helps, folks.
