I'm gonna be getting a Newton soon, and I have a few questions about it.Synchronization What type of Mac do I need to sync the thing? I want to get an old Mac laptop and use that. I was thinking a 520c, but am open to any suggestions. How does synchronization work exactly? Is it like Palm HotSync where you push the button and everything goes? Or do you do something else? How can you enter information in via the Mac? Accessories I'm getting a keyboard with it, but I would also like a modem. Is eBay a good place to check? How can I go online and do AIM? Thanks for everything in advance, icebook1 |

If you get a Newton, try to get an upgraded 2000 (to a 2100) or an actual 2100. You will appreciate the speed and extra memory. You need Newton Connection Utilities (NCU) on your Mac. This will work with any OS 8 to 9. Can't remember about 7. Someone is developing new software that is OS X compatible. Any Mac with a serial port will do. However if you want a fast connection, get an ethernet card (read info at chuma.org) that is Newton friendly. You can also do a wireless connection with the new drivers from Hiroshi's web site. Have to run but will get more nfo online in a while Kami

Sync: That depends on what you want "sync" to do.If you want to be able to have your calendar on your newt, and sync it with your computer, and edit stuf fon the computer and sync it BACK to the Newt... you need something that will run Claris Organizer, and it's seriously clunky. UNLESS you are running OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). Sometime this week or next, we get AddressBook and iCal Sync functions. VERY nifty, and in fact more functional that anything pre-X. How about I list my accessories, so you have an idea what your options are: Keyboard Newton Fax Modem (Cig pack style) Serial dongle (MUST have for a 2x00) 3Com Ethernet Card Orinoco Gold WiFi card Smart 2814 PC Card Fax Modem DeskWriter 320 printer (Serial) DeskJet 340 printer (IR baby!) Compact Flash mem cards via adapters ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie Admin of The WonderLAN ~~"We are all Mad here"~~ |

how else can you connect a newton to anything other than the serial dongle or ethernet. or to be more specific how can you get the drivers for the ethernet card onto the newton without having to get a serial dongle (and does the keyboard need the dongle?) preferably using a q700, an lciii, an imac, a recent pc laptop or a w95 pc desktop. i have an ethernet card kicking about soemtwhere that might be compatible and since i live in northern ireland theres no way im paying the shipping costs on something im going to use once.im irish, it is my duty to ask stupid questions. From a totally blank Newton... with only the software that is built into it you have 2 choices: a serial connection (which requires a dongle, OR a cable with dongle built in) or a Mac with IRDA (if that iMac of yours has IRDA you can use it)More specs on your system? ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie Admin of The WonderLAN ~~"We are all Mad here"~~ |

This is the chicken and egg problem with the Messagepad. IrDA is your best bet without the dongle (and yes you need the dongle for the keyboard unless you get the SER-001 board). Kami

the imac doesnt have irda (dv+ 450), but the pc laptop does, and i doubt that would be compatible. may as well get a dongle then.im irish, it is my duty to ask stupid questions. (macs liberated:3 (well, its only been 2 months....) |

If the IR port on the Windows laptop is IrDA compatible, you CAN use it.you DO need the Dongle for a keyboard tho. ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie Admin of The WonderLAN ~~"We are all Mad here"~~ |

Great so far, what about where to buy?? I don't want to deal with eBay for the actual Newton, but would do it for the keyboard and case and stuff. Thanks, hopefully I'll get some replies about where to buy...

I haven;t bought anything from these guys but others on NewtonTalk have had good success withhttp://www.jksalesinc.com/newtstor.htm They have a fairly comprehensive listing of Newts and accessories There are others out there like GEM Enterprises. Try doing a google search on Newton 2100. I just bought a bare 2100 (no AC, no stylus, no battery cage) from a fellow named Larry Brenner in New York. Ny 2100 just died. He was very helpful in getting me a 2100 with no scratches in the screen Kami

IIRC, the 2100 (and 2000) can use regular AA batteries as long as you have the battery tray. Battery life can be short so most people use rechargeables in the tray. When my Newt was working <sniff>, I did use NiMH rechargeable AAs (1700 mAH)once in a while. Worked great.Kami

I just ordered the Newton 2000 special package from GEM Enterprises. When I checked out, some little dialog box came up that mentioned their server and my email. Something like "please wait for our server to refresh." Anyway, I placed the order again, and am now worried that (A) they didn't get the order or (B) I am now paying for 2 newtons. Funny thing is, they didn't ask for a credit card # or method of payment. Just asked for the name, address, phone #, and email. Anyone?

I happen to like the leather case that maccables has.It has 2 metal fobs on the back for attatching to a strap, or hooks... and a leather and elastic strap on the back that you can put around the back of your hand. One of the PC card slots os accesible form outside... which is good, since that allows the Wireless card to peep out. My 2100 is seldom NOT in that case, which i bought form maccables. ~Marchie ~Chaplain Marchie Admin of The WonderLAN ~~"We are all Mad here"~~ |

These are great features! I especially like the idea of having one of the slots accessible for swapping PC cards. I could keep my other card loaded with apps in the other slot. I think I am going to buy one! Thanks for the feedback

I thought I would take a look at their order page. If you look down at the bottom centre, right above where it says quantity, you'll see the payment method is defaulted to Money Order/Cashier's Check I did a quick run through and there are a number of other steps you need to complete before the order goes through. Click on the SHOW BASKET button at the top left of the screen (where the words GEM Enterprises is located) to get confirmation of your order and the billing info. HTH

Kami-- where do you see the billing info? also, I can't find the Money Order / Cashier's Check that you mentioned. Lemme go look again...OOOOOOOOH. Now I see where you went. I clicked on the Newton Special Package link, and was whisked away to that page. I placed a "1" in the quantity box for the Newton 2000 deal, and clicked Add to Basket. It then popped up a box saying that the item had been added to my basket. I clicked Show Basket up by the GEM Enterprises logo, and saw my item. Clicked checkout, and entered my name, address, phone number, and email address, and clicked Submit order. It gave another popup that said something about the server having to refresh. Then Norton Personal Firewall popped up and said that email address has been blocked to "GEMENTERPRISES.COM". I can't figure out how to not block it. It was late last night and I was tired, and didn't really understand the box. All I know is that IE gave me a "Page not found" error. I'm on a Compaq PC with Win. ME and IE 6. I soon hope to be on a Newton 2000 with NewtOS 2.0 and NewtScape... if I can get the darn thing ordered!!!
