I've been looking at info on the first mac prototypes and ran across an interesting site with a lot of shots from Kunkel's Apple Design coffee table book so i thought I'd share it:

Wow, I really like the sketch for the portable with the display separate from the keyboard. That rocks...

Oh wow, and the TimeBand? And Popeye? Those are also nice.

Funny that they had a a machine with the codename of "Jaguar" back in 1990!

I have that book, and I'm glad I bought it back then.

I have three proto-designs scanned online, for you guys to see:
LC 720: predecessor to the Power Mac 5200
Columbo: the follow up to the Quadra 950?
Juggernaught: next generation Duo design

The LC720 never existed but would have been based on the earlier logicboard design, using a 68040. It must have been scrapped in favor of the Power Mac 5200/75 LC.

Columbo is a full tower design, originally to be powered with a dual 68030 logicboard, possibly for the server enviroment. I don't recall why it was killed though.

Juggernaught is a touchscreen Duo made of multiple parts, with names of DeskStation and WorkCase. Additional parts were called Eye (codename: TacoCam), Keyboard Station, and PassPort

(edit: oops)

The Jaguar was designed to be the first RISC based Mac, the prototype used a motorola 88110 chip. It was never released becuase the operating system (which used the Mach microkernel) would not run current mac software, and back in 1989 Motorola could not make 88110 chips in sufficent quantity.

Yeah, I remember reading in an old MacWorld some consternation about Apple EOL-ing the Mac and creating a pure RISC machine based on the 88100.

That juggernaught design is freakin awesome. If they were to realease something like that today, I don't care what bank I would have to rob, I'd buy it!

Withtoday's bluetooth and airport and arrising hot swapability, this would not be TOO hard to create, and the versatality, as well as only buying what you need, would make it very powerful and economical IMO.

There is only one path and that is the path that you take, but you can take more than one path.

That is the coolest mac I've ever seen! Shame they never released it.

I like the BoomBox

that little black thing that's like an LC, and it's black and uses a 12" monitor... the keyboard is kinda dumb looking, but with the MacTV keyboard/mouse and it has a cool little handle. I would LOVE one of those, with a black audiovision and a black adjustable keyboard set. then we have a lab of them and a larger version with more things for the power-user kind of person

I also like the palladin and the "hook" between the color classic and the LC5x0
