Should I?http://www.smalldog.com/product/42347 I can afford it. It will just mean ZERO spare cash next month, and then I'll have to wait a month or 2 before I can afford the 17 inch flat panel monitor that goes with it ... before I can even boot it. (Unless I can sneak it [not bloodly likely] to Spaceboy's work area and hook up that Mac's monitor to it. I just want to make sure it boots.) I've been looking at used dual 533's on eBay and most of them go for for $1300-1500. I want a dualie. I want to do some video editing and 2 processors chewing on a render are better than one. 68K's liberated: 4 68Ks adopted to loving homes: 2 PowerMacs adopted: 1

I'd say get it. Its a nice system, and will take you far into the future. Also, you can use any SuperVGA monitor on it, as well as Apple Display Connector monitors, so you won't have to wait until you get your 17 incher to power it up.-------------------------- "I keep my friends close, but I keep my enemies closer" - Unkown Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

I'm getting mine on November 2nd!!! Less than a month now! Whee!!!I went through the same process that you are now going through, looking at older G4's on Ebay and local tradepapers, and I determined that cost of getting a used one was either the same or negligably lower than springing for a new DP 867. I mean, even if I saved $200 or $300 getting an older G4, the differences in the system architecture between the mirror-drive-bay G4's and anything before them is huge. PLus, if you want to do video editing, I would strongly reccomend against anything slower than a 800MHz G4, even if a 'dualie. So, the high-end iMac/eMac and the single-chip G4 800 should be your bare-bottom if you're serious about video. I also had the same problem as you where I can come up with the $1700 part no problem, but sourcing another $500 or more for a display? Not until February at the earliest. So, I figured I'd either get the DP 867 and use it with my Apple Multiscan 1705 (17" and 1024x768 max), which although a little crappy and bad on the eyes, would at least give me something to look at until I could afford a better display. But, then I found the holy grail of deals...Mac Zone has a special going on until the end of the year where any purchase of a new G4 (DP 867 included) gets a FREE CRT monitor! The monitor you get is an AquView 7GS, which is a flat-screen, 17" (16.2" viewable) CRT with a 1280x1024 max res and a .27 pitch. Not the best monitor in the world, but very decent, and very free. You don't even have to pay for the monitor (MSRP for it is $150) and then wait for a mail-in rebate, you just get it scott free! I'm probably going to be using the AquaView they send me with the DP 867 for quite some time, since I need to be able to have at least a 1280x1024 resolution and getting a LCD panel that supports that is way out of my price range, even next year. P.S. - Or, yes, you could use your 17" PC monitor, as all G4's do come with an adapter. P.P.S. - I didn't notice that the one you're looking at on Smalldog is a refub unit, therefore a couple hundred cheaper. If that's the most you can afford, then yeah, you might not be able to go with the one at MacZone, which is about $1750 with standard shipping. I'd say get the one at Smalldog and use the monitor you have now. That thing looks really, really sweet! I'd say go for it- who needs spare cash when you can have a dual-G4 PowerMac?! :-) SpaceBoy PS You're welcome to bring it up and try it on 'my' G4's screen! I agree. My decision, though, was based more on the fact that even though I won't have much money after I get my DP 867, I will be able to serve my graphic/web design clients much more efficiently and with better results than I had before, therefore making me more money on the side, and offsetting the financial investment! It's a win-win deal! 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net Edited by - cinemafia on 10 Oct 2002 14:28:27

Cine,Well, that refurb unit's the cheapest I can afford w/o going in to debt. And if I'm going to get a machine that's been factory fixed and has a 1 year warranty, why not get it $100+ cheaper? As for monitors, I don't want a new CRT. The next monitor is an LCD either a hypercrisp 17" apple or formac. 68K's liberated: 4 68Ks adopted to loving homes: 2 PowerMacs adopted: 1

My DSL was down earlier in the week so I tried to use America offline dialup again, it was so disgusting I could barely stand it. Between that and the forums being down, I actually had to resort to doing some work!

I just got off the phone with my father.I just discovered that my mother's death (last year) has left me with a small inheritance. My dad just discovered the note he wrote himself last year to have her life insurance policy cashed out and divided between me and my bro. (Understandibly he was considerably distracted at the time -- we all were.) Not only is my computer paid for, but so is the monitor of my choice. Even from beyond the grave my mom rocks. 68K's liberated: 4 68Ks adopted to loving homes: 2 PowerMacs adopted: 1

Sorry to hear about losing your mother, but congrats on being able to get the display of your choice with your new 867! Go all out! Now I'm jealous...I have to wait 4 weeks until I can order mine!! P.S. - So, Kady, are you brave enough to do the 167MHz bus/1GHz chip hack? There's a guy on FUBAR who did it and has been running for a few weeks now with no side effects. It's a pretty insane thing to try on a new machine, but at least for him it's paid off. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

Wow, sorry to hear about your mom Kade, but yeah, she does rock! Wow a dualie, that would be sweet. I'm beginning to think maybe I need to get another P/T job to grok out some more bens to get something like that instead of stuffing one dollar bills under the mattress. I've got "NeedanewMacitis" so bad, the plasma center knows me by first name...heh-heh.Macs Liberated: 9 - 6400/180 (main Mac), 660AV, 636CD, LCIII+, LCII (2), Classic II, Classic and SE. I just noticed on MacZones website that the expiration date for the free monitor deal is Halloween, so I'll have to order it on the 31st. If I get a little help from my parents, since they're in town this weekend, I should pull through.I'm also planning to get a Sonnet Tempo RAID card, which has two ATA-133 channels and onboard, hardware RAID capabilities. It's only $200, which puts it at less than half the price of a dual-channel Ultra160-SCSI RAID card! I don't think I'll be actually able to afford any ATA-133 drives, especially since I'll need at least two to get started, but knowing that I have it there will be nice... 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

Arrg! Decisions!I mistyped a number on my cc so it declined. But last night at CrampUSA I saw a Dual 800 for $1200. Take the 800 + monitor home tonight? Resubmit my CC info for the dual 867? The problem is, I don't bring my credit card to work, so I'd have to wait until Monday to resubmit. 68K's liberated: 4 68Ks adopted to loving homes: 2 PowerMacs adopted: 1 |

Yep, go for the 867. Besides the 67MHz chip bump, it's got DDR RAM, a faster bus, more drive space, a better video card....666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net
