I got my Powerbook Duo 280c. A few keys don't work, but aside from that it works. I have been in touch with the seller & they have promised to send a replacement. What I want to do is to copy the disk from the Duo before I send it off. I followed networking advice from cinemafia(used a while back) quote: So, it looks like your best solution is netwokring. Fortunately, this is very easy on a Mac. Just take that serial cable that you use to connect a printer and run it from the printer port on the Performa 400 to the printer port on the Quadra 840av. Now, boot both machines up. Go onto one of the machines and go under the Apple menu, into Control Panel and open AppleTalk. Set it to the printer port, and close the window. It'll probably take a little while to open the port, then it'll close. Now, go back under Apple, into control panel and open File Sharing. Setup your computer name and password (if you want one) and hit "start" next to file sharing. Do the same thing on the other machine. Finally, go under the Apple menu and into chooser on the Quadra, and click on AppleShare. You should see whatever name you set the Performa 400 to be pop up on the menu, click on it and hit OK and it will prompt you for your username/password (if any) and ask you what drive you want to mount. You select the drive, and in a few seconds it should mount right on the Quadra 840av's desktop. You can then copy anything off it like you would an internal hard drive (only it will be running at about 0.9MBps, AppleTalk is dreadfully slow).
The PBDUO has file monitoring listed, not file sharing. I could,'t find file-sharing in the extentions either. Does the file sharing have a file with a name that I can search for? shaktiman Quadra 840av, 128MB ram, 2MB vram, cd drive(caddy),1 caddy!:-) 1.2 gig drive, 4.23 gig drive 3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 56k modem, Stylewriter 1200, Umax 1220s scanner

Do you have Appletalk enabled on both computers for the correct ports? You may want to doublecheck that. Also make sure in the Appletalk control panel that the Network # reflected is the same in both systems. If that isn't it, try a different cable. The File Sharing itself is for network identity and turning it on/off. As long as everthing is hooked up and set-up right, you should at least "see" the other computer listed when you click on the "Appleshare" icon in the chooser."One slip and down the hole we fall" Check out the new forum on the block at: http://www22.brinkster.com/originalstryder/db/ |

Yes I had Appletalk enabled on both. How do I check thew network number & how do I get the hash sign? The Duo is now back in transit. I will try to network Quadra to Performa tommorow see how I get on. shaktiman Quadra 840av, 128MB ram, 2MB vram, cd drive(caddy),1 caddy!:-) 1.2 gig drive, 4.23 gig drive 3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 56k modem, Stylewriter 1200, Umax 1220s scanner

Okay, as for the hash sign, I just used that to indicate whatever number you choose to use. It can be whatever you want, but has to match in all the machines for it's network. To check it, first pull down the Apple menu and choose Control Panels. In Control Panels, choose the AppleTalk control panel. Once it's open, pull down the Edit Menu and choose the User Mode selection. There are three choices here, you want either Advanced or or Administrator. Both of those modes will show you the Appletalk Address boxes of NODE and NETWORK. The one you'll want to change/double-check is NETWORK. NODE should probably be left alone. Okay, I just wanted to know how to get a hash sign, . Well the Performa is talking to the Powerbook. But alot of the system wont copy because "it is in use" ?????? (shakti goes cross eyed & falls backward fainting) YES WITH apple you can network easily, but if you want to copy useful files there may be a problem. lol. I plan to put internet acces onto my Powerbook. I have alot of work to do. fingers crossed. shaktiman Quadra 840av, 128MB ram, 2MB vram, cd drive(caddy),1 caddy!:-) 1.2 gig drive, 4.23 gig drive 3 monitors 15" & 14" & 14" os 8.1 56k modem, Stylewriter 1200, Umax 1220s scanner

A client won't be able to copy some system files, since they are obviously in use. You need to initiate the transfer from the server.~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

They are essential system files, the reason why the server has to initiate the transfer is so that it knows what's happening to its own System, rather than trying to write to it when a client may be reading it. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

it's not even that. The reason it's in use is because he has the system in operation. The only way to really copy the system files like "Finder" and "System" themselves is to boot off a different system disk. What Shakti would probably find easiest is to boot off a different startup disk then duplicate the "system folder" on the hard drive. ( I mention this because unless you burn yourself the cd-rom of your Mac's system folder with Appletalk prefs already set to your specs., you won't be able to complete the transfer) After it's duplicated, just restart the Mac normally and copy over the new folder to the other machine via Appletalk."One slip and down the hole we fall" Check out the new forum on the block at: http://www22.brinkster.com/originalstryder/db/ |

AFAIK you just need to duplicate the System, Finder, chooser, AppleShare extentsions & CPs , and the Network CP and copy those over instead. Then you have all the files that will be in use already on the system.NOTE: This will take substantally longer than duplicating the entire system folder. 68k Liberations: 3 A-II Liberations: 1 Active work: >=2 |
