I'm sure that you've all hear about my Project, I'm going to choose a server OS, set it up and maintain it, possibly as a real internet server with forums, and a website and even :gasp: FTP access...

so i'm using Intrikit Weaver
Dell OptiPlex GXi
Pentium 200MHz MMx
64 MB RAM, hope to upgrade that to 128
3 GB HDD, 2x2x24x CDRW drive
Crystal Audio, S3 Trio 64V+

so basically, any operating system will work on it, no questions asked

here is my list of OSs to test

Windows NT server 4
Windows NT server 5 beta 2
Windows .NET Enterprise Edition Server 2003
Mandrake/Debian Linux
Solaris/Darwin Unix
BeOS!!!

I'm going to compile facts about each of them, and facts about each of them running on my PC then make a decision to run one of them, install and maintain it with a website and some forums, possibly some other internet-like services too.

I'm also thinking about creating an intranet with it, ahh, the GeneNET as it was meant to be... (i'm going to start calling the internet the GeneNET)

h's nmothing wrong with using a mac at all, in fact, my original plan, before this came a big project, was to use the IIsi with A/UX as my server, this being mostly because it's already loaded up with a nix, making it a nixie box, and at that, it's a pretty nix box.

but for this project, I'm testing some newer Operating Systems, and some other things...

when i can convince someone around (where i live) to download and burn a 68k nix, i'll probably load one of them up on the quadra and include it in the test, or use it as a general purpose machine (GP for short)

but i have this dell here, and this dell that's a pretty good machine, this dell that when i bought it, i said to myself that either it would become a GP machine, or it'd become a server.

i can assure, there's several macs that would be partaking in this "intranet" if it was to be true... like the brother's perf 578, and the siSTATION, EverLast, Hamtaro, and... whatever other things I'd have at that time...

in short, i don't have a mac that'd be able to run and test all of those PC OSs, although i hear tell that a PowerPC mac'd run NT server 4... i haven't gotten it to work

Yes, I am sure that the quadra 840 could probably do jsut the same as the Dell, any day of the week, even outperform it, but there's just some parameters of the test that the quadra doesn't meet... i'd LOVE to test osX server against .NET server, or windows 2000 server.... and I'd like to see what other NOSs there is for mac, and what they can do...

i just odn't have a mac that can run things like that
although....
I *could* begin accepting donations....
now who has an extra Xserve lying around...

.NET Server WILL NOT run on your P200MMX box, I believe that it only runs on a P3, because IIRC, we were having trouble installing it on a spare Proliant 1600 we had lying around. your best bet would be a *nix distro, or failing that, Win2K with WARFTPd for FTP and Apache Win32 for web, UnREAL IRCD for irc, etc etc.
anyway, good luck with your project (For Linux, I recommend SuSE Professional, but your preference)

With the exception of the soundcard, the PC will run OpenStep well.

Yeah, I'm interested in stopping it from spreading. Do us all a favor, don't support M$.
Use a *nix, try OpenStep or Linux.

Personally, I'm trying to stay M$ free, I'd go with Linux too, much more stable. I use Win NT and 2000 at work, I can hack in minutes and they always do all kinds of stoopid stuff on their own. One box keeps resetting itself everytime we use the shared printer. I'm glad I'm not the tech for that thing.

jus my 2 cents.

the idea of the project was to test many *modern* server platforms.... including .NET, win2k, solaris, NetWare, and other nixes

.NET will run on a 200MHz, it's on the requirements that it needs a 133MHz... so i could underclock a bit and still be fine

really... i've been told that Debian was just SOO wonderful, and that i'd probably choose it...

the idea is not to advertise M$, but it's not to fling insults at this operating system that is brand new, not many people have tried it

that proliant... did you have a boot disk? because i think that .NET won't boot from the CD like some others will (I tried)

currently, it won't run because of RAM restrictions, other than that, I'm good to go

I'd test OpenStep, but i haven't got an OpenStep CD, and i've tried already to install Rhapsody

I'd like to reiterate... this project is NOT to advertise M$, it's to build a web server that works the BEST with the available hardware...

knowing me... I'll choose NT4 server

i've used it before and it's fast and stable, i have the full version that's legal and has all the features i need

I have a complete copy of Solaris 8 for x86 if you want it to try out. :)

It's in DiscJuggler format.

You only need the latest copy of Disc Juggler. Even the demo works fine, although the demo only writes at 1x speed, but really to get qulity cd's 1x is a fair speed.

I don't know where to get it, just do a google. :)

And when my ftp goes back online on Monday it will be there.
