I went to my local PeeCee (eww!!!) vendor today to pick up an Apple 15" monitor today ($15) and they had a AIO 5500/225 PPC (yes, I know its not a 68k...) and I asked if they had anything else Mac. They really arent in the Mac business, but I know a guy who works there. He says "I got a big Mac- ;P tower thingy, you wanna see it?" Of course my interest was piqued, he brought out a Performa 6400/180 PPC. I was giddy with delight, to say the least. I know this is really a 68k forum, but I had post this to let you all know. I also managed to get a 660AV and 3 keyboards, 3 mice and 3 mics, PLUS MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Office, Claris Works 4, System 8.0 and a bunch of manuals to go with it all. So let's recap:

Performa 6400/180 PPC CD-Rom, 1.5 gb hd, 32 mb ram, floppy,
Has built in sub-woofer, etc..
Quadra 660 AV, 40 Mb Ram, 2.5 Gb HD, NO CD :(
15" Apple Multi-scan AV monitor
3 Mac keyboards, 1 is the adjustable kind
2 plaintalk mics, 1 little round apple mic
MS Excel, Word, and MS Office, Claris Works 4.0 & Emailer
asst'd manuals for all

total price: $50.00!!!

I am soooo stoked about this find, I don't know if I could find much better for such a loooow price. It was a great day!!!

Wow...very nice! I'd take the 6400, too, I've always wanted one of those.

I got the same computer with monitor, keyboard, mouse, and software for FREE! Beat that!

It's a great machine. If there's no zip drive in the top drive bay, you can make a cardboard drive sled to fit it and put in any 50 pin SCSI HD. Power and SCSI cables are already there. The subwoofer and 1024x768 @ 256 colors resolution make it good for MIDI sequencing and Finale work. With DigiTrax or an older version of Deck, it makes a fairly good multitrack audio recording computer. Cheaper and better than a 4-track tape deck. It'll run Linux, though I can't get Yellow Dog to work with mine. It'll also run BeOS, but I've never tried it. (BTW, if anyone has BeOS R5 PPC, please upload the whole raw device image to someplace!)

Right on!
I'm still hoping to use BeOS in my Multi-OS-on-one-Mac project... but I need some help finding a good PPC version of the OS... hint hint...

BTW, how much was the 5500? If you can get it for a good price, buy it and put its motherboard in the 6400. They're the same form factor, but the 5500/6500 motherboards have onboard ATI accelerated video which is much better than the 6400's RAM-based video. The only thing is that the 5500/6500 boards will only take EDO RAM, so any FPM RAM you may have in the 6400 won't work.

Yea I guess free would be hard to beat, but the good part is I took the 2.5 Gb SCSI drive out of the 660AV and put it in the 6400, now I've got plenty of HD space for lotsa goodies. I need to get some more memory though, its only got 32 Mb right now. Photoshop is a bit shaky on large files. BTW- they want $200 for the 5500, A little rich for my blood right now.

Oooh! Nice liberation! The 6400 is a beautiful machine, trust me. We had one in the Shop yesterday, which I was working on. Unfortunately, the 20 gig HD that i was trying to get going in it was sorta screwed up, but i got to listen to the boot chime with the subwoofer several times, and for anyone who hasn't heard the 6400's subwoofer, its NIIIIIICE, believe me! The 660AV is also a nice machine, too. I hated Mum that day one went up for auction and she wouldn't let me buy it...:-\

Today I was at a thrift shop and I came up a Quadra 950, I got a little lightheaded and had some benjamins in my pocket, but I had to restrain myself. I opened it up and it has an accelerated Nubus video card in it and all the ram slots were full. I think it was either a graphics horse or maybe a server. I am torn, I have a PPC Mac and I've vowed (to myself) no more 68k's (SAF is the reason) but I think I can land this one for about $20, I'm not going to ask anyone here what I should do cause, I know exactly what you would say. But the real question is, do I need it?

Cheers!

What might you need it for, you ask?

A/UX with AppleShare Pro - make it into an MP3 server
Audio workstation - add an AudioMedia card and a SCSI card
It's just a great Mac!

Get rid of the LCII's and buy the 950!

I agree too. The 950 is a very fine machine.

Ya know, I have agree with you guys, the LC's should go, but there is just one, small, teensy little problem with buying that 950 it's good 'ol SAF, I kinda let it slip out what I was thinking while washing the dishes after dinner. It was as if I'd said I was going to have an old flame stay at the house for a week. Whoops... anyway, I'll admit it, if I could do it I would. Besides, my real lust is a B&W G3, Rev B. - SCSI and IDE, FireWire, USB and ADB, 1 Mg L2, ZIF upgradable to G4, that's a tinkerer's nirvana. Can you tell I've done my research? I really don't have time to fool with the 950 anyway, I'm leaving town tommorrow for about six weeks (work) and it would just sit until I got back, I'm afraid it might not be there when I got back.

Cheers!
