Too cool! Congratulations! And, you probably already know, but rumors have been flying around for a while now about a Mac version of the ATI AIW. For now, we have to settle for a Formac Studio DV + TV, which although a much superior product to the ATI AIW, does cost a prohibitively expensive $400. It's Firewire, bus-powered (doesn't need an outside power source) and captures at better rates than an AIW. I'm planning on getting one, or perhaps just the non-TV tuner version (which is $110 less) when I get a 867 'dualie. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net Edited by - cinemafia on 03 Oct 2002 16:39:25 |

VERY cool, great article, KM! I agree wholeheartedly that the Mac needs something like the AIW. That was a great article in MaxPC, I still want one of those Wide@$$ 24" Sony CRT's! 56k internal modems wouldn't be a bad thing either, but I guess USB actually ought to be good enough for that. This points out exactly what has irked me for my entire Mac/PC using lifetime, the polyglot, B.S. PDS menagerie of what few slots ever appeared on most consumer Macs never really allowed for the growth of any market large enough for economies of scale to to bring prices of cards down to where the average Mac user could afford them so as to drive the prices down so that . . . VICIOUS cycle when it works in reverse! BLEH! I wonder if it's the same story with the AIW as it is with PCI WinModems? The cards are stupid, most of the processing is just dumped onto the CPU and the drivers don't need to be nearly as complicated if you do it that way. They have the mobo bus speeds, CPU clock rates and Quad Pumped DDR memory bandwith to burn over on the dark side to make it work, so it doesn't matter as much. Until Moto fixes the FSB limits of the G4, we're still gonna get pounded in system performance and that's not gonna help to get more hardware support for the mac at all. jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. Great article! Glad to see a Pro-Mac person, with plenty of first-hand knowledge of the PC world writing intelligent commentary/criticism of the current State of the Mac. I have AV capablities on my 7600. (Haven't played with it yet.)But, still ... I want an AIW! I'm hooked on the damn thing. I put it in my machine, installed the software and I'll be damned if it didn't work exactly the way it was supposed to. 68K's liberated: 4 68Ks adopted to loving homes: 2 PowerMacs adopted: 1 |

I don't actually own one yet, I'm just planning on getting one (or maybe a Dazzle) in the next month or two, after i get my G4, of course. quote: Have you been over to cinemafia's site/forums?Hey that reminds me cine I signed up to your forums but somthing went wrong, I will try again.
Do you mean the Macintosh Film Forums? It's not actually mine, per se, although i did help found it and I am one of the two admins. We'd love to see you there, and anybody else interested in film/video-making on their Macs. We had a bit of discussion going on at first but lately the place has been dead. Guess we need to advertise more...? quote: I have AV capablities on my 7600. (Haven't played with it yet.)
They suck...big time. The 7500/7600/8500/9600 all came with onboard RCA and/or S-Video capture capabilities, however, they can only capture at 320x240 and 25fps, max. There's no way to accelerate the onboard capture, either! Take a look at this thread on 'fritter that I dumped a lot of info in about it. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net Edited by - cinemafia on 04 Oct 2002 13:53:51 |

Yeah. Who doesn't hate the bastards? I'd prefer a CommSlot Geoport "Modem" on a Performa 6200. On the other hand, according to my experience, a GeoPort CS2 modem isn't that bad on a Performa 5400, as long as you aren't running much else. The time i ressurected a Performa 5400 at the Shop, i spent the afternoon surfing the internet on it while having iTunes playing in the background. It wasn't bad, but the machine got terribly bogged down until i quit iTunes. Maybe if i either had more than 40 megs of RAM, or used GrayAMP/iCab instead of iTunes 1/Nutscrape i would have fared better. Either way, nice article Kady. I've been waiting for the AIW myself, even though all my PCI based machines (other than my iMac, of course) are PCs. -------------------------- "I keep my friends close, but I keep my enemies closer" - Unkown Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6
