Pardon all my questions, don't I just feel like the perfect newbie. Here's the scoop, I've been using Macs since 89 with an SE-HDFD/20 and System 6. It's been years since I've owned a "low-end" mac. Just bought a Duo280c and am reaquainting myself with the joys hardware limitations. I really just want to use the Duo for game playing, I still have most of my software from my SE, and some light internet usage (I'm sure I'll have questions about that). The most complex games I'll be running are Dark Forces and Marathon. Which version of 7 should I run? My Duo has 16 megs of Ram, but I'll install Ram Doubler 1.6.1 so that'll do me just fine. Are there certain versions that that were resource hogs? Are there benefits to 7.5.5 versus 7.1? Thanks. - The box said I needed Windows XP or better so I bought a Mac. |

7.1 would probably be best. It's faster than 7.5.5 and it uses less RAM.Official 68kMLA Music and NeXT Expert OpenStep Page at http://openstep.topcities.com/ Macs Liberated: SE (2), LC, IIsi, PB 145b, Quadra 700, 6100 (2), PB 5300, PowerMac 5400/200, Performa 6400/180 PCs liberated from Windoze: 3 |

What's the approximate RAM/HD footprint of 7.1? My 7.5.5 is approximately 4.4mb/28mb, this is with Ram Doubler and ATM installed.PS. What are thee benefits of 7.5.5 over 7.1 on my Duo? Is there a decent reason to run the newer system? Edited by - triumph_larry on 03 Oct 2002 09:34:01 |

Well, 7.5+ has AppleScript. I don't think there was much you could do with it back then, though.Wonko The Sane Engineer-in-training 3 Macs Liberated "You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool."- Wonko The Sane |

How big is your hard drive? If you have at least a 160 megger, i reccommend that you find yourself a SCSI MicroDock, an external CD ROM drive, and a copy of Mac OS 8.1. Regardless of what you might believe, 8.1 is actually a nice system on LC '040s, and will run perfectly on your Duo 280c. Just don't buy the floppy disk version, unless you find it fun sitting in front of a computer for about an hour inserting disks. -------------------------- Give your dreams a chance.™ - Apple in the mid '90s Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

Now where's that fuggin 'any' key? Macs liberated thus far: SE-30, Performa 6320CD and Duo 280c. |
