I came here a long time ago but only made a few posts. I remembered this place and came back...

I write Chatline, a new suite of software that's a lot like Hotline. But, I support 68K! Yes, get fresh hot 68K versions of Chatline, as well as PPC and OS X versions.

The current version of Chatline is kind of dodgy. I'm working on a new version, with 68K support, of course, that works better.

Hmmmm, interesting. I'm switching over to using a hacked LC 475 as my server, and I will have to try out your app and see how well it performs.

What port(s) does it use, BTW? This could be a solution to the problem I'm having lately where I can't access my server from work due to the recent blocking of the default Hotline port on the company LAN.

I've been playing with the Chatline for around an hour or so now and it works great! It seems more stable than others I've used and a bit friendlier. It's worth checking out, for all three platforms.

The control port is 7210, and the download ports are from 7230-7234, although an old Server v1.1b2 pre-release (no 68K on that though temporarily) does use only 7230-7232.

The new Server v1.1b2 has new code and therefore only needs 7230 as the download port.

Great, I don't think they block any of those ports here at work!

I do not advertise it on a full scale yet. This is due to the lack of a strong Chatline Server. I'm working on it though and it will be available "when it's done".

We should add it in addition with hotline.

I've been playign with it and will probably set it up on my server before the end of the week, just incase people want to use it.

There is only one path and that is the path that you take, but you can take more than one path.

What? No Windows, Linux, or Unix versions? I am afraid I will not be able to use this. Not as a server anyway. I still have BasiliskII however, for a client...
Could you make Linux and Windows versions eventually?

Hello Mike,
Great idea, I must say. I have a laundry list of things that suck about Hotline compared to other Peer-to-peer communications apps. You don't have to take any of this TOO seriously. Just trying to help out::::

I agree with catsdorule in that it should at least be Hotline compatible. Otherwise, it would be like going upstream. People who already use Hotline would probably be a lot more comfortable trying this out if it was compatible with Hotline.

I read the "mission statement" on the site and I do like it. Especially if you intend not to include some of the features that hotline has, like bots and banners. Guests should always be able to download, and admins shouldn't be able to kick without having to shut down the server, because that's just mean. I hate it when I've 349 megs of a 350 meg file and the admin decides to kick me because he decides doesn't like my ip address or slow download speed or something.

One thing that I could use that's sorely lacking in the Hotlne server is bandwidth throttling. The Hotline server uses a primitive form of this with maximum number of simultaneous downloads, but then you could end up with someone who has a really fast connection eating up all your bandwidth anyway, and then there's little left for everyone else. There should be an option to limit how much kb/s any one user can use at a time. It also shouldn't allow you to set it to an absurdedly low value either, like below 1 or 2 kb/s.

Another thing that's sorely lacking in the Hotline server is built-in searching capabilities. Clients like PitBull can search, but they have to download a complete catalog of the directory before they can do a good search. If it's built into the server component, then searching is much faster, because the files are right there locally.

This is all the ideas I can come up with right now. I hope this is more of a help than an annoyance. I would love to help you with the programming aspect, but I'm afraid I'm not much good when it comes to that. The only languages I know are BASIC, Assembly and PASCAL. Get me too far beyond ResEdit and I'm no good. Anything menial, though like writing docs or something, I'd be glad to help you with.

Hope this helps,
Robert
