I just picked up two AppleTalk System Connector kits and now I have my Classic and Power Mac 6500 networked. Strange issues though. (The Classic is running System 7.0, the 6500 9.1.)If I try to connect to the 6500's hard drive, I get a divide by zero system error and have to restart. If I try to connect to the 6500's CD-ROM, everything is fine. If I try to connect to the Classic's hard drive, using the 6500, everything is fine. I'm thinking: It crashes because the 6500's hard drive is IDE, which the Classic probably doesn't understand. (Was IDE around back then?) The CD-ROM and Zip are SCSI, which is why the CD works. (I didn't try the Zip.) Can anyone explain? Also, is there anyway to network the Classic, the 6500, and my G4 Sawtooth all at once using AppleTalk. (Without buying an adapter for the G4) I'm thinking no, but I wanted to be sure. Thanks. |

Yes, there is. All you have to do is network the G4 and the 6500 together using Ethernet, and install the LocalTalk Bridge control panel on the 6500. This effectively turns the 6500 into a software router, so all three computers should be able to see each other/talk, keeping in mind that (with OS X especially) networking tends to work one was only, with large age discrepancies. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

If I'm remembering right, OS 7.0 won't recognize a HD that's over a certain size (2 GB, was it?) unless you update the software. "One slip and down the hole we fall" Check out the new forum on the block at: http://www22.brinkster.com/originalstryder/db/ |

A 2GB limit sounds reasonable. Does anyone know if 7.1 supports greater sizes? Like 40GB?

IIRC it was 7.5.2 which pushed up the limit into terabytes.~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

I guess I'll stick with 7.0, or maybe go down to 6.0.8, then. It's already sluggish as is.

You could also partition the drive into smaller capacitis where your classic // would recognise them as individual drives."One slip and down the hole we fall" Check out the new forum on the block at: http://www22.brinkster.com/originalstryder/db/ |

True, true.I did like ~Coxy said, installed LocalTalk Bridge on the 6500, and I'm experiencing some issues. Or maybe I just have more questions. All the Macs can see each other, no prob. The Classic cannot connect to anything else, do to the 2GB limit. The 6500 can connect to the Classic, but not the G4. Some connection error that I can't remember at the moment. The G4 can connect to the 6500, but not to the Classic. I select the drive I want to mount, then wait. Nothing happens and no visual feedback that the G4 is doing anything. Suggestions? Answers?

From your post, I'd guess the G4 is running OS X? The computers I've used have the same problems, namely: 1) OS X machines won't connect to computers over a bridge 2) No Mac OS 7.6 or below computer will be able to connect to an OS X machineeven though they can all see each other. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

I was told once on these forums that the only way to use drives larger than 4GB is to use OS8 or later. Some 68k's support this, like my Perform 636 running 8.1 for instance. mathgeek 68K Macs Liberated: LC, Performa 636, Mac Classic II My Powerbook 1400 page http://www.its.caltech.edu/~dgoulet/1400 |

Anything before 7.5.2 only supports 2GB partitions, but anything from 7.5.2 and up supports 2 Terabyte partitions. However, the other problem is the HFS+ file system. The only non-PPC machine that natively supports HFS+ is the Quadra 840av, and this is only because it has SCSI Manager 4.3 burned into its ROM. If you want any other 68k to be able to read HFS+ disks, which most PPC's and anything G3 or higher is most likely using, then you need to install SCSI Manager 4.3 on it, which has a minimum requirement of System 7.5.666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net Edited by - cinemafia on 09 Oct 2002 12:40:55
