1) "There is not enough memory to load all of your extensions. This may result in the loss of network and other important functions.

To make more memory available, remove one or more extensions from the Extensions folder or reduce the size of the RAM disk and/or disk cache in the memory control panel then restart your Macintosh."

2) "The Finder could not start because there was not enough memory available.

To start up, use the CD or floppy disks that came with your computer. Top start up from a CD, hold the "C" key while starting up, or consult the User's Guide that came with your computer."

Don't try to boot 8.1 with 4 megs of ram, kids! What situation would lead to the display of the first but not the second?? I got them in that order

Make sure 32 bit addressing is still on.

I'm pretty sure the C610 only supports 32 bit addressing. In any case, I only need 8 megs.

Have you installed a lot of new software? Any time you add more extentions to your sys, it has to draw more memory right at startup to use for loading all of them. Try start-up with extentions disabled and then go into the extention manager and set it to load the OS's base extentions only, then restart. If everything goes well there, you'll know that was most likely it and you can go back into the manager and start reactivating the ones that are neccessary for now. Until you can add more memory that is. You might want to see what Virtual Memory is set to as well. if that's set too high and you've used up most of your HD space or if it's too low and it's needed to compensate for lack of pysical ram, that'll cause problems sometimes too.

I think there's a misunderstanding. This isn't a problem. It's perfectly clear why I got the message. I was trying to boot into 8.1 with 4 megs of ram. That just doesn't work. I stuck in another 4 meg simm and went on my way...
