If i'm not mistaken you need at leased a 030 for unix /linux and you need a PSU to run *nix.-Danny Forum: http://www24.brinkster.com/catsdorule1/ "Windows(win-doze): A 32-bit extension to a 16-bit graphical shell of an 8-bit operating system originally coded for a 4-bit processor by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition." |

thanks for the information, just a couple questions what do PSU and PMMU stand for. i have been browsing around and found some SE/30. i am not familiar with mac hardware or processors, but i assume the 30 stands for 68030? what about 68k minix? also, would it be possible to port linux to any of the pre 030 processors? thanks for the responses! donald

I think certain linux distros support 020's (though only 2 macs used them). I'm sure that each version's site has a list of which macs are supported. You're right about the SE/30 - it's a 16mhz 030. For info on which chips run which macs, check out the link belowhttp://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/index.html PSU stands for...um...power supply unit., unless I missed something. That's the thing you plug the power cord into... PMMU is the processor memory management unit, if MY memory mangement unit serves me. (aren't I a riot!) I don't think I could tell you what it's for, but it's a nice thing to have, I know that! It's integrated into the processor. That's as far as I can get you. { candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 3} { My baby: Q660av } Edited by - candyPunk on 28 Sep 2002 12:34:46 |

I think it's Page MMU, as in Paging for Virtual Memory, IIRC, But my MMU's usually not on the right page . . . =8-/jt ™. Trash Hauler: call sign: eight-ball C.O. AC-130H SpecOps 68kMLAAF |

I believe that when you all say "psu" you are referring to "FPU" which means "floating point unit" it does "floating point" calculations... it's built into the mc68040 processors, but NOT built into the MC68LC040 processors you can't add an external one to the 040s IIRC...it isnot built into the 030, but you can add a 68881 or 68882 coprocessor for the FPU... My Mac IIsi with an ethernet card which supports adding a coprocessor works great for A/UX... apple's unix for 68ks Official 68k videographer |

i see a lot of those type ethernet cards that have an fpu socket for 030 computers... is there any difference between filling the socket on the motherbard vs. the expansion card? (what if i fill both of them?) -- Performa 630 LCIII SE |

Actually, JT, read the post above where he says "a PSU is required to run Linux."That's true, of course, but he means PMMU. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0
