i'm working on my email server, it's a performa 476 with a full 040 and 12 meg ram.

Ok, first off i was wondering if anybody knew if i could put system 7.1 on a ram disk and boot into that regularly, and if so how big is that? I don't know much about system 7.1 or lower. I don't know if i have enough ram to do it, but i was hoping that it would save the hdd from crapping out. If this could happen, would it even spin the hdd down? Or could I just pull the drive and boot off a floppy if i need to?

Second, is it possible to automate restarting on my performa 476 (it has 7.6.1 on it now, but i might be putting 7.1) on a schedule of once every day or so? Could apple script do that?

Is there a cd of 7.1 or is it only floppy? and if it's just floppy, what't the easiest way to install if i have no floppies?

System 7.1 didn't come on CD. Plus, to install, you need to boot off the install floppy, IIRC. 7.1 is available from Gamba's page as floppy images; you'll have to write them to disk to install.

I have no idea if energy saver works with 7.1. Maybe the control panel from 7.5.5 would work in 7.1. I don't know.

Booting from a RAM disk is fairly easy, but you need a bit of RAM. Lets look at what ya need....lets say when you boot up your System uses 1.5MB RAM, and I'm assuming that you want to run your email server and lets say that uses 3.5MB RAM. So just to run your OS and applications you need 5MB total. Now you need to think about physical space - for example: a System Folder is about 2MB and lets say the email application is 1MB = 3MB total.
What i'm trying to say is that, for this example, you'll need 8MB or physical RAM. A 3MB RAM disk plus 5MB of RAM left over so that when you boot up your System and any applications you're using don't run out of RAM. You could turn on virtual memory so that the Mac uses the HD as RAM, but then you're kinda working in circles....

Where is all this going? Stay with me - I'm feeling like Kady Mae, all stuffed up with sudafeds and other drugs.... alittle bit vague....

1) OK, boot up as usual, and in the Memory control panel set the size of your RAM disk. Bearing in mind the above you'll need to make it 3MB in size to be able to fit the system and applications (you could of course just have a System Folder and run the apps from the HD)

2) You'll need to reboot before the RAM disk appears on the desktop

3) When you've rebooted, copy a System Folder plus apllications to the RAM disk (you may need to 'bless' the System Folder)

4) from the Startup Disk control panel, select the RAM disk as your boot disk.

5) Welcome to ultra fast boot times!!

The only problem here is that, with a 476 and most other desktop Macs, you can't shutdown or else you lose the contents of the RAM disk. You can restart with no problems though. I'd say that with a 476 (especially if you have 36MB of RAM) that you'll be able to run quite efficiently of a RAM disk. Good Luck

was there a net install variant od 7.1?

I'm thinking of keeping the hdd in an external case for the randoms times i need it, but typically keep it turned off. No hdd in the 476 and run everything via the ram disk.

My only other thought is do the same thing on a 950 with 256 meg ram, but then i'm using a ton of power. Can the 476 psu possibly go in a q650 assuming i use no hdd and/or nubus cards?

there's no way i'm going to be able to get a 32 meg simm for that 476 right now, i'm broke since i don't get a handful of ppcs and and a g4 for free . Anybody have a spare 32 meg 72 pin simm selling for cheap or know where i could find it?

There were some for sale new for under ten bucks somewhere recently, I think there was a link in an 8100 thread in pre-G3 on MAF.

Almost. I've got a couple 'restore CDs' that have 7.1 on them. (i.e. CDs that came with specific systems. I've got about 30 of 'em, most PPC models of 7.5-era, but I've got a few Quadra CDs with 7.1) I'll see if I can find them and make an ISO.
