Hello all!

I'm really excited about getting my system (6.0.8) up and running. This was only possible through the MLA's kind and patient resolve to help those such as myself. However, in the process of skidding through learning curve, I've no doubt erase, moved, copied all sorts of stuff!

Coming from a windoze environment, I know that this creates all sorts of gaps in ones hard disk where it's recommended to defragment once in a while.

Being new to "The Mac Way", I'm still learning the ropes and am wondering if the same phenomena exists with the Mac Classic. I'm under the assumption that it does.

My problem is this:

Is there any way to defragment the hard drive without starting over and re initializing (thus erasing) the hard drive then, the re installing everything?

I heard that one can defragment by holding simultaneous keys during startup. But I don't know if this is a rumor, and if not, does this apply to sys 6.0.8?

Thanks for reading!!!!

Take care!

You really don't have to worry about fragmentation on a Mac too much. However, if you really want to defragment, there are programs like Norton Utilities for Macintosh that will do the trick.

As for defragmenting at startup, I think you're thinking of rebuilding the desktop file. It's good to do this about once a month. The desktop database contains information about what files go with what programs and what icons go with what files. It can get fragmented or corrupted over time. Hold down the Command (Apple) and Option keys while you boot the machine until you see a dialog box asking if you want to rebuild the desktop on your drive. Click OK.

BTW, I just thought of a way that you wouldn't have to go to Kinko's anymore. First, you'll need to download Stuffit Expander for 68k from http://www.yamhillesd.k12.or.us/ESDPage/tools/mac/StuffIt4.0.2.hqx

Decompress it and put it on a Mac floppy disk. Then, install it on your Classic.

Next, download HFV Explorer on your PC. You can get it at http://www.kearney.net/~mhoffman/basiliskII/system753_tutorial/downloads/HFV_Explorer.zip

Download something on your PC that you want to use on your Classic. Use HFV Explorer to put it on a Mac-formatted disk. Then, use Stuffit Expander on the Mac to decompress it.

Hey!!

Thanks alot! This makes a lot of sense! Ok, so it's a matter of rebuilding the desktop now and again! I'll do that.

I'll also look for Norton disk utilities that can help me out if I really want to do a Major Defrag!

About HVF and Stuffit Expander:

Hey! I haven't tried this option yet! This would be great!! This would solve a lot of headache as Kinkos is getting old!

Thanks again OldMacMan! Again, you guys rule!

Later!

You don't even need HFV Explorer, you just play around with the settings in Basilisk II and have it map or load the C:/ drive. The C: drive will load like any other drive on the Mac desktop, That's the way I did it.
