!!!

*puts on AC/DC - Are You Ready*

Just got pronounced the new owner of an AppleVision 1710 today @ the Shop. No matter how much ColourSyncing I could do to it, I couldn't get rid of the horrible green tint, so they told me to chuck it. Of course, realising that a monitor of this caliber belongs anywhere but the dumpster, I asked, "I'd actually be more than happy to take it off your hands if you want", and I GOT IT!!!!! So great...if i can twist a pot or two to fix up the green tint, this baby is gonna rock my LC475. I might also be able to get an AV enclosure, with the speakers and stuff, that I can replace the twist and swivel base with. CAN'T WAIT TILL THE HOLIDAYS!!!!!!

P.S. I may also be able to get a newer PSU for my 8100. Things are looking up!

Well, today I got an AppleVision 750...

Also,
3x 5400/160s
1x 5200
1x 5260
2x 630s
1x 7300/200

Plus a LaserWriter 16/600, and a few more monitors, and a Colour OneScanner...
There's also some more stuff coming in a few weeks.
If it's any consolation, though, this is not for personal use.

WOW. But why isn't it for personal use? How/where/when do you have access to it?

wow... i wish that i could have an apple monitor more than 14" that's not built into my iMac 233 (32MB RAM), in fact, i know that there's pretty cheap 16 and 17"ers at the local place in the as is section... would make great for the quadra... (uses an audiovision 14")

Well, I didn't get that 1710. However, i did get another one. This one, I found it sitting on the floor @ the Shop amongst a bunch of dead monitors. Plugged it into my testing rig that they let me use, a Centris 650, and flipped the switch. It runs ok for 30 seconds, and then starts flickering like a bad TV picture. The tech tells me to chuck it, but i ask if i can grab it too, and he says yes. I picked it up on Friday, when we finished school for the term. Unfortunately, there was only enough room in the car for one 1710, so i grabbed this one (and a Big@$$BoxLot of other stuff, ALL MINE), and took it home. Plugged it into The Hackintosh (aka my LC475). It started flickering and stuff, but it only lasted for a few minutes. Since then, it has worked BEAUTIFULLY. Not a single problem! With the extra VRAM i put in there, the ability to run 800x600 at 16 bit colour, instead of 640x480 at 256 colours is a godsend, and the colour is beautiful. In addition, games look excellent, too. I cannot say enough about this thing! So much for a "road Apple".

Btw, I also got that AV enclosure i was talking about, and yesterday, I took off the tilt and swivel base to install the AV enclosure. Damn! It doesn't have the same type of plug as the tilt and swivel base! Does anyone know the pinouts for the cable on the AV enclosure that run to the intermediate board? Also what voltage does the amplifier board run at? I'm thinking that maybe an EvilHack™ will let me power it with an external power source. Even so, I'm not upset or anything. Without the AV enclosure, this is still one FREAKIN' AWESOME monitor!!!!!

Free stuff is good stuff!

I bought one of the 1710s with the 6400 for my mother - it's lovely!. I ran a microquadra on one for a lil while - it gets 1152x870... more than my iMac!

Heh i know. Its beautiful too. Unfortunately, that means that i have to suffer with a grainy 256 colours...eww. Its better to set it to 832x624, and run it in 16 bit colour. Thats how I have mine set up. Its beautiful.

Ahhh - same problem with the 6400. Standard onboard video, and it doesn't do 832x624 in thousands. Pity... but 800x600 will be fine for mum to learn on :). Might peek around for a semi-decent pci video card, it has one slot free...

Just thought you might like to know I had it hooked up to my iMac this afternoon. Surprisingly, the Rage Pro was able to take it all the way up to 1600x1200, even though Apple says that the 1710 only supports up to 1280x1024. It was only running at 60Hz, but still, it was very nice. Its hard going back to the internal 15" display.

FYI, I have a Tray loading Revision D iMac 333.

. . . and the moral of that story is: SLOTS RULE!

I'm spoiled, the lowest res of any of the three work machines in my KVM setup is the Radius Card in the 2300c's dock pushing a measly 1152 x 870 x millions @ 75 hertz onto 21" of PrecisionView 2150 Real Estate!

Even the 6360/G3/400 Crescendo box has had the CD pulled and a full length Radius PCI card stuffed into it to get past its pathetic 1024 x 768 x 256 colors @ 70 hertz barrier, FINALLY! It does 1360 x 1024 x millions @ 75 hertz to handle setting up Big@$$ plotter files now! I still have the ability to add more CPU's when I get another KVM switchbox for the VGA feed to go with the ones on the BNC side now.

The moral of my story is not bragging about my workstation . . . (well, maybe that too . . . jussa'lil'! ), it's to show that with some judicious planning and tolerance of the limitations of what may be somewhat lesser systems, yet have the option for expansion at a later date, you can wind up with everything you ever dreamed of having and do if on a shoestring budget!

Just try to resist the urge to buy into turtleneck's song and dance routine about disposable Macs being the best thing ever while inside the RDF. A closed system box is adequate for two, but never more than three product cycles, even as a second line machine once you've experienced any higher end system.

IMHO, of course!
