First, I want to thank Tim for the wonderful trade.

Back in the day (1993) I owned an original Newton MessagePad. Unfortunately, after being dropped over a dozen times, it finally decided it was dropped one too many times, and died on me. After switching to the kind-of-dark side (Palm,) Another fine 68kmla'er was kind enough to offer a trade that included a MessagePad 120. It came this last Saturday, and it was sweet.

I had forgotten the fun of the cursive recognizer, and had never known the true joy of the print recognizer. This truly is the king of all PDAs. (Even if it is only marginally smaller than my Sony PictureBook full-blown-notebook-computer.) Now I'm having the fun of digging up Newton Software, and trying (in vain, it would appear) to get an Ethernet card to work in it.

Now all I need is to get an eMate (or a Duo,) and my life will be complete...

I have a Duo, why didn't you ask?
It's a 230 that needs a latch, re-assembly, a new HDD, and a powerbrick.
B&W passive matrix, 8-12MB Ram, 120MB HDD, 68030 25mhz (?).
Eft=same Tim from above post.
Also have 3 500 series (540C & 520), and a 190CS.\

Can't get regular ethernet on it, or the WAVELAN?
Regular ethernet took a weird order of loading .pkgs to get it active on the 2100 I have. I got the 2100, and didn't really look @ the 120 you got after. eMate is cool, too, but mine doesn't have the memory upgrade, so no mail/web browsing on that.

Dang, that kind of sucks. Yeah, from what I've read, the 120 is just too underpowered for web browsing. Oh well, it's a fun conversation piece. (The only major problem is that all my contacts/calendar/etc are on my Windows machine, which has a motherboard with no serial ports! So I'll have to use a serial -> USB adapter to sync the Newton.)

if your 120 has the 2.0 ROM, there is ONE Ethernet card that will work (you can find out which one by reading the Newton FAQ, available at faqs.org and thisoldnewt.net and by typing Newton FAQ into GooglE)

for software: unna.org

The other alternative (which will work for both 1.x and 2.x Newtons) is to use a LocalTalk bridge, either hardware or software.

My personal favorite is to try and find a Farallon Etherwave Mac/PB or printer adapter. It plugs into a regular serial port and, out of the box, will act as a dumb LocalTalk bridge. I've also heard of people having good luck with Dayna EtherPrint boxes, but I've never tried one personally.

Becaus eof the way the OS is set up, you cannot get Internet access via a LocalTalk bridge, however.

Is this for the MP120 w/OS 2.0, or for any Newton? It may be why my eMate doesn't want to network...

that is for all Newtons.

Apple didn't write a stack that allowed TCP/IP over AppleTalk (MacIP).

I HAVE figured out one option tho that I'm working on making a how to for.

The Newton CAN do SLIP (Serial Line IP). Useing a Null modem cable (most Mac Printer cables work, as will 2 Mac -> 25pin serial modem cables with a null modem adapterin the middle), you can have the Newton "dial in" to a SLIP server on your internal network, and access the Net that way.

My HowTo will cover how to do it in OS X (assumeing you have a serial port to use), A/UX, as well as how to build the right adapters/cables so you can do this over ethernet wires in your house (not thru a hub, just over the wires themselves).

Along those lines, I keep meaning to see if Mocha W32 PPP
http://www.mochasoft.dk/palm.html#palmppp could be talked into working with NIE.
