I downloaded a file from one of the official hotline servers, which supposedly allows you to run OS 8 on a 68030. I was wondering how succesful this is. I just recently bought an LC 520 off Ebay and was wondering if this works for this particular model. I've been playing around with this file and OS 8 inside Basilisk II for Windows 2000 trying to figure out how to get it to work, before I try it out on the LC 520. I've succesfully "tricked" the installer to install OS 8. But when I try to switch to the disk with OS 8, it won't boot because the control panel/extension isn't loaded to trick the operating system. There's something about changing boot ids, from one of the text files included,I'm thinking that's the last step, but I don't know where to find or change boot id numbers. So if anyone has gotten this to work, and wouldn't mind telling me how they did it, and what kind of limitations this has, I'd appreciate it. I'm kinda a newbie to Macs in general, but I have "liberated" an old Duo 280c and Mac SE before. Just not too familiar with all of the little config files and such. Thanks.

I don't know why anyone would want to run 7.6 on an '030! I have serious doubts about the utility of 7.5.x on them too. Playing games to get X to run on G3's doesn't make any sense whatsoever to me either.

Why would you want to run 8 on a 68030?

Well, I'd really like to give OS 8 a try just for the heck of it. I'll probably end up installing 7.6 instead, but I've really haven't gotten a chance to play around with anything after 7.6. Its kinda a like those people who run Linux or Netbsd on their Dreamcasts, it's probably not worth all that work, but you usually end up learning something. I'm just curious to see if this works, I've read an article on lowendmac about something similiar, so its gotta be possible.

If you tell Basilisk II to emulate a 68040, OS8 should run fine.
I'm running 8.1 here.

Unless you mean having B2 emulate an 030...

I'm running 8.1 on an LCIII right now. It works fine. The method on gamba's site is easy and free. It's just really really slow

Thanks for the help. I just found gamba's site today. I followed the instructions and everything went smoothly. Now I'm gonna try it out on the real machine when it gets here this week. Nothing like using old skool Resedit to get things to work :).
