Howdy, folks!
I'm just wondering if peer-to-peer file sharing (ala Napster) is dead, or if there are still site/services/programs that are up-and-running. I've been poking around online, and I've been able to find some programs (Aquisition, X-Nap, Myster, etc.), but I've been unable to establish any good connections and actually get anything. Granted, some of the trouble is doubtlesly related to the firewall(s) on the school network I'm using right now, but that can't be the only thing keeping all these programs for working properly!
So, if any of you are still swapping music/files, how are you going about it?
Jes' wonderin'...

PS I'm not really trying to fire up (yet another) debate on music sharing vs. music stealing/piracy! I'm just talking about file sharing in a general sense...

Hotline has a 68k client. There is a Carracho client for OS X, too.

This is slightly off topic...... a lot of people here recommend using Hotline, so I gave it a go one day and it all worked fine. But the question is, why use hotline instead of FTP?? Are there advantages to Hotline that I don't know about??

cheers

There is a system of trackers that lets you see what servers are online at any given time and what files those servers have on them. You can go to http://www.tracker-tracker.com/ and search for a certain server or file on Hotline.

Hotline also has "agreements", News (although I dunno how many people read mine...), and, i dunno aboot FTP that well so it may be able to do this too, the ability to comment files. At the time it started, i dunno if any FTP clients could "resume" either, i LOVE that feature!

There is only one path and that is the path that you take, but you can take more than one path.

One thing I forgot: Hotline knows how to handle both forks of a Mac file, so you can download self-extracting archives and installers from Hotline servers and they will work.

BTW, you can resume with FTP, at least with any good (non-M$) FTP server. However, you can't comment files, and FTP screws up any files with resource forks.

and HotLine is bad for anybody that does not use a Mac or Windows however to access the net. I haven't been able to find a decent HotLine client for Linux, and the Windows version with Wine is just not working.

Well ,for those that are using PPC Mac's, I'd have to recommend an app called Drumbeat. You'll need need OS 8.1 or higher. You can find out more at this link:

http://drumbeat.info/download.shtml

One of the best features of it is you can search over 50 servers at a time for whatever you're looking for. I also like the filters you can use to block out unwanted stuff from showing up. It's worth checking out
