hi, i have a quadra 840 with about the slowest bootup in the world. i haven't timed it, but without exaggerating i'd say it usually takes about 6-8 mins!! it's ridiculous. i can go off and eat lunch sometimes and it will still be sitting there at the "Welcome to Mac OS" screen, not even loading extensions. once it starts loading extensions, it goes quick like normal. But the funny thing is, when i boot up with extensions disabled, i still get the same problem. It just takes forever.

I'm about to reformat and reinstall the OS (regardless of this problem, i want to anyway)... do you think that may fix it?

also, what is the method of booting up from the 7.6 cd? i've troled holding c (which i know works on newer macs) and cmd+opt+shift+del which i heard should work, but all that did was disable extensions. what's the deal? thanks!

uh oh... i just kind of got it to boot up the cd, and i went to initialize the disk to clean it off and start fresh... i guess that was a bad idea though. now it said initialize failed, and now it WILL NOT SEE THE HARD DRIVE AT ALL!!!!! even after restart. and when i do the test function, it says it fails too. this really sucks! i had a perfectly good hard drive (or so i thought) and i was getting it ready for my midi studio this next week and now i can't at all. :(

have you tried all the different formatting tools as yet? Apple, HDT, Silverlining, APS, etc?

Dunno about silverlining, I might have a REALLY old copy somewhere, I use HDT, I think somebody said there was a copy on the hotline server, you can't get the 68k version commercially, AFAIK.

My Quadra 840av starts with a grey screen which lasts for about 20 to 40 seconds (I think), then it loads extensions & all in all takes perhaps 1min 30 to 2 mins.

If I remember correctly, with each of my hard drives, I have allways got the "Initialization failed" at least once. My 4.2 gig came formatted, but my Quadra wouldn't accept it & it took me the best part of a week, with advice from the seller to get it working.

SCSI can be funny. How many SCSI devices do you have?

If you don't have any joy then consider changing the drive id &/or make sure you have termination set & make sure it is set on the right drive.

for example:- if your cd drive was set for termination then you probably would have difficulty formatting a drive, although you would probably be able to read the drive although your boot up might be very slow.

This sounds like it could be it.

The scsi termination & id on cd drives is usually fairl easy to deal with as there are big clear labels on the back & big jumpers. Hard drives are a law unto themselves & you may have to open up your hard drive to change the jumpers.

jumpers can be bought from electrical supply shops(more like Maplins than Currys)

shaktiman, why would the jumpers on the hdd need any changes if it was once running the os and everything just fine (aside from the slow boot up)?

also, how can i change the scsi id? i've actually tried testing and initializing about 15+ times...Go to Top of Page

I had this exact same probvlem, both the slow boot and not being able to boot from a CD, last week. Flashing the PRAM fixed it for me, as this usually speeds up boot-up time and will let you boot from a CD.

As for the bad hard drive, youy're going to need a 3rd party app like HDT 3 to fix it, it might need a low-level format or something such. The problem is getting HDT 3. You could download it off my Hotline server, but then you'd have to burn it and a working OS that will fit onto a CD from another machine.

Best thing to do would be to get a second SCSI hard ddrive to put in the 840, and initialize/install the OS onto it, then you can worry about fixing the other drive. Even a smaaller, 200-500MB drive would work in your case. If you absolutely can't find one, I can probably help you out. I have a few old 200mb drives that I have no use for, maybe even a 800mb, too. If you're willing to pay shipping ($4 in the US) I could send one to you with a clean install of OS 7.6.1 or 8.1 along with some diagnostic apps on it.

Make sure the internal drive is terminated! A non-terminated drive can show all sorts of funky SCSI voodoo like this. Another way to make sure is to attatch an external SCSI device, and terminate it. (That works on my IIfx; with no external termination, it won't see the internal HD, WITH external termination, it will. I know I could get a 'black internal terminator', but those things are expensive!)

Have a peek at Gamba's website

http://home.earthlink.net/~gamba2/hd.html

for information on hard drive formatting software. Links are available to downloads.

I haven't had the incredibly long boot times like you but did have problems with a drive in my 840AV. I had the best success with Lido 7. It was the only software that saw the drive on the chain and was able to initialize and format the drive.

Also, you may be able to use a minimum system on a boot floppy disk AND a formatting utility to check the drive in question.

actually the black terminator is the expensive external one and the internal thingie is a filter, IIRC. I had one for the six IIfx's in the stack and I lost it! where can I get either?

p.s. to blazes with ASCII art, this is the freakin' WWW!!!!!

SIP Resistor Pack 2 req.

or there could be soldered reisitors with a jumper or switch to remove the voltage to enable/disable them.

Nowhere.

Seriously, I was looking for one of either on eBay for two years and only saw one come up once, and it sold for more than $30.

Bad juju

Me Qaddies playin up.

at the moment this page has loaded this reply box, but isn't loading the rest of the posts, although it seems to be trying.

How to check if it's terminated,

I am not sure what to tell you.

I can email the person who sold me my hard drive if you want, & if he wishes he can contact you.

I have a terminator(which I plan to keep). Inside my pc was scsi & the hard drive has a terminator, or at least I believe it to be. It is a black block on the end of the scsi cable.

If you want a terminator it could be worth checking old scsi machines, whether they be mac or not!
