I'll save the story of my first Mac, my IIcx (I had (and still have) an Apple //e before though) and the rest of what I got for later, but right now I need some help.

(short, basic version version of story)

My IIcx ran fine for a while when I first turned it on.
Then I got a couple of bombs (it has System 7.1 installed) relating to bus errors. It was off for a while after that.

Now, ever since then when I turn it on, the happy Mac icon comes up, somethings (rarely though) it gets to the Welcome to Macintosh part. But usually the happy Mac part comes up, then shortly after it resets. The video blinks and it does it again. It does this until it is turned off.

Last thing I've tried (I've tried lots) is moving the video card (upgraded Mac II video card) to a different slot, but it makes no difference. I did manage once to get the dead Mac icon by hitting the programmers switch (the one that brings up the debugger) at the right time, but thats only happened once, and I usually don't hit the debugger button while its starting up.

Specs:
8 MB RAM
Mac II video card (upgraded)
Conner 80 MB HDD
"Apple High Resolution RGB Monitor"
Square style Apple ADB mouse
Optimac keyboard

Have you tried rebooting with the extentions disabled? It could be a conflict when they're loading, but once it's up you can run a diagnostic program such as Norton or even the disk utilities.

Um, I'm not really sure I wnat to know the answer to this, but how did you come up with your nic? It's not really on subject so you may want to anser that one in the lounge.

I've tried booting with extenstions disabled, yes.

About my nic[bk[/b](not Network Interface Card ;-)), I've used it for years. Don't feel like going on more about it.

Anyways, I tried taking all but one of the sticks of RAM out of the IIcx. Turned it on. No video. Okay, try with two sticks. No video. Three. No video. Four, no video. Put the remaining four in, still no video. Tried the video card in a different slot again. Still no video.

I think I need a new, fully working Mac.

At least now I have a nice monitor, keyboard, and mouse, so if all I can find of a fully working Mac is the box, I'll be set.

I emailed you the Service Source PDF on your //cx. Maybe it can give you some ideas on how to save, extend, and/or give it new life.

The e-mail in my profile is my junk and sign up address, in fact I go so far between checking it that it gets deactivated.
If this forum supported it, I would hide my e-mail address anyways.

In other words, I didn't get your mail.
You can use my real webmail address,
my username at netscape dot net

Thanks.

Actually, that type of thing is common, to stop crawlers getting the address and subscribing you to junk email.

At least there is some good news.
One of the sticks of RAM wasn't in all the way by a millimeter or two.
Fixed that, I get video again.
I still had the hard drive out, so I turned it on and got the blinking disk icon. Didn't try a boot disk at that point, although I probably should have.

I've made a few boot disks using WinImage, none of which the IIcx will boot from (with the HDD in anyways.)

However the disks seem to be okay since they mount okay under HFVexplorer.

All of the disks are ejected after my IIcx reads them.
They are:
- Basic System 7.0.1 disk
- System 6.0.8 1.4 MB disk 1
- Network Access Disk 7.5

Hmm.

Today I bought a replacement battery and installed it... still the same old problems, plus it still ejects my System 7.0 boot disk. :/

Any more ideas?

I recall a bug or something that required a key to be pressed when inserting a floppy? Don't remember what it was, google (macintosh "rebuild desktop") and you'll get several listings of key combos and modifiers.

Quick follow up here as I should be sleeping.

I recently used an older PowerMac at school to create System 6.0.8 diskettes. They boot and seem to work fine on an SE FDHD. The poor thing has screen burn in. :-(

I was creating boot disks on a PC before, but no combination of many things could get that to work.

But not only do those not work, the boot disk which boots on an SE FDHD does not boot on my IIcx.

Whatever I do, including booting with HDD disconnected, it reads the disk, ejects it and gives the bad disk icon.

Ideas?

Spitting the disk out like that indicates that the floopy does not have a valid system folder on it. Either the 6.0.8 disks you've created are plain old corrupted, or it may be that the System Folder has not been 'blessed' (believe it or not!)

To 'bless' a System Folder....
1) insert the disk into a booted up Mac
2) open the disk and look at the folder icon for the System Folder
3) if the icon looks like a normal folder then it needs blessing
4) to bless it, just double click on the System Folder
5) close the window again and take a look at the System Folder icon
6) if it looks like a normal folder, with a System or Mac icon in the middle of it, then the blessing has been successful!

Personally I'd be looking at loading System 7.1 or 7.5.x onto the Mac (I'm not much of a fan of 6)

cheers

Hmm.

Still no luck.

First I tried using vMac to bless the System folder.
No use. Only lasts for while vMac is running.

Tried using Basilisk II under 7.0.1 and 8.1.
Sort of works, but not really.

Used Disk Copy under B2 to write a new 6.0.8 diskette.
Seems to be blessed.
But only in certain applications.

HFV Explorer still sees it as not.

I've tried copying System 7.0.1 to a floppy also, no luck.

None of these things I have tried make my IIcx happy. It always reads the disk, ejects it, and gives the bad disk icon.

(I don't currently have any other Macs besides the IIcx)

I used the same PowerMac and SE FDHD today to "bless" the system folder.

I made two copies of Sys 6.0.8 disk 1. Both boot on the SE FDHD.

Nothing boots on my IIcx.

I've had problems myself when swapping disks between PowerMacs and older Macs - or more to the point, newer OS to older OS (particularly Macs running OS8.x and 6.0.x) it's something to do with the operating System (??) Which is one of the reasons why I reckon you should try a System 7.5 boot disk, rather than 6.0.8

I've never heard any good results with people using PC's to make usable Mac floppy disks. Sometimes it works...but mostly it doesn't. If you can make a system 7.5 startup floppy on the PowerMac I reckon that will solve your problem.

cheers
