Wow I didnt realise the q950 had rca jacks.

I'll have to go & look @ the specs.

but, why? would be my question

the q850av is av but the q950 is q950a?

I am jealous cos y dont I have rca jacks?

If someone hacked together all the best 68k macs then it would be great.

Shaktiman, if you want RCA jacks, Apple made an adapter from dual RCA -> 1/8" Stereo Plug. Look for it.

They did... It's called the Quadra 840AV. (What does it not have that you could possibly want?)

As I see it.........

My 840av is underpowered for what the machine is.

It is criminal to restrict the machine in the way that it is.

It should have more memory available.

It should have an 060 cpu.

It should have better audio input/output.

It should have more expansion(to increase the hieght to allow two more free bays would be good)

& as trash says a little more compatibility would be good.

perhaps allow more vram also.

a cache? a larger cache?

with the suitable power the 840av would be scared of no other machine, IMHO

You're talking about a machine coming up on ten years old now. It's all very well to say that Apple should have started shipping 1 GHz 68070s in their lineup in '95, but that's just unrealistic.

Not to mention the ram amount - here, ram was around $50/meg when I got my A1200... at the time that was about $30US a meg - $1,000US for a 32mb simm!!

no wonder taking 4 of the things wasn't too much of a restriction at the time!

Even Win***** 95 didn't REALLY require four of those MEGA SIMMS back in '95! I can't believe they're available new for under $10 today . . . gotta buy some!

I completly accept the argument about the price of ram.

I guess what I am saying is that the 840av was a machine "ahead of it's time"

& what are we saying?

Can we hear the 840av?

"I could have been a contender"?

The 840av is a good machine.

But it is underpowered for it's capabilities.

With a little work it could be made into a much better machine than it is.

Apple macs are different than other computers & thier most endearing legacy is that so many of them still survive & can still be put to good use.

Perhaps the worst thing about macs is the os.

Perhaps this is why:-

Atari ST kept same computer but the os goes from Tos 1.0 up to Tos 2.06. & if you get an ST use Tos 2.06 because it reached a pinnacle, a high state of useability.

Apple Mac changed computers alot & the os perhaps didn't have time to "settle down".

I want to use Tos 2.06

The only really downside I can see to the 840av is the lack of a direct processor upgrade. The machine was great for its time, but it isnt really underpowered or anything like that. It was very powerful for its day, but if you are looking for a similar machine with more power, you jump a year ahead to 8100av or another year to 8500av.

I don't really understand why you always say things like:
"But it is underpowered for it's capabilities. With a little work it could be made into a much better machine than it is."

The machine isn't underbowered for (1994?) when it came out, and it was made in to a better more powerful machine....the tower cased AV series....

The only thing we really can say Apple could have done back in 94' is include a processor upgradable PDS, or made an 875av with a 68060...

Call me cory, but i think that you're not focusing wide enough, at that time, Apple made EVERYTHING that you'd ever want for your mac except for some of the software...

Printers
Scanners
NuBus Cards
aftermarket Keyboards
Monitors
Media

and as a WHOLE, my Quadra 840av is a great system, and very fast in almost everything that i use it for.

My gripes:
can't use higher colors with video input
mine has one broken serial port
not onboard RCA stereo sound input
if anything, we should be thrashing this system for it's backplane layout, or for not having 6 serial ports,

but NOT for being not powerful enough, and NOT for not being expandable enough, if i understand, there is 128MB simms that *might* work in it, if you want more RAM, go ahead and try, in fact, try going all the way to 512 tell me how it goes

everyone tells me that i need more RAM for it, YOU try living with only 32MB on your iMac, no, i think that the quadra would be fine even if i downed to the 24MB that it had with i got it
.ME end rant

but otherwise, I'd LOVE to see an 060/75 quadra with RCA audio in, and 512MB of RAM, while we're at it, let's port ProDOS to a toaster

W heres the thing.

I "think different"?

I certainly speak a different language.

Yeah I checked out the later av's now & I am drooling. But the Quadra 840av was/is the best & is underpowered. It promises so much & certainly was 10 years ahead of it's time (2004)?

They should build it again, now, today, this minute. It would be great!

The Quadra's lovley.

ok, but you add a more betterer processor, and you basically have an 8100, or even an 8500 without the audio i/o

an 840 is an 840, NOT an 860 or an 875 and i thin kthat my *840* will last me until at least 2004, hopefully, it'll last well after my graduation year of high school (2006)
