Some problems with my loggin. I apologize if this is a redundant message.

First of all, greetings good people of the MLA!

I am currently using 6.0.8 on my Mac classic. I love it. it's great, efficient and nostalgic! However, somewhere along the line, I crossed wires and realized that I can't cross-platform it with a PC for writing and exchanging text (oops). I was told I needed sys 7.0.0 for this.

An aquaintance of mine told me to download sys 7.5.5 over 7.5.3 (the latter not being as stable).

I couldn't find a 7.5.5 from the download site and am thinking that he meant 7.5.3 is more reliable than 7.0.0. (Is the aquaintance as confused as I am???)

7.5.3 has about 19 bins!! Wow, that's a lot of download time at Kinkos. What does 7.5.3 have that 6.0.8 don't have? Before I commit to wiping out 6.0.8.

Just want to make sure that I'm doing the right thing about the 7.5.3 upgrade just to get PC Exchange.

P.S. Those shirts are pretty cool! I may have to get one!!

Hiya, I don't think your acquaintance is very well informed. AFAIK there are no reliability improvements in 7.5.5, in fact, I believe that it is usually advisable to avoid that upgrade unless you have one of the machines requiring the networking tweaks. 7.5.5 was not a bugfix, IIRC.

You should probably stick with System 6 unless you have 4 MB RAM or more in your Classic. Even then, 7.0.1 or 7.1 are your best bets; System 7.5.5 practically devours RAM. 7.0.1 is free, and 7.1 is downloadable from Gamba's system software pages. 7.1 takes 6 floppies, IIRC, but I'm not sure about 7.0.1.

Look on your System Additions disk for something called Apple File Exchange. It lets you read and write PC disks. If you want PC disks to show up on your desktop, you'll need some version of System 7 and the "PC Exchange" control panel. As for MS Word compatibility, get Word 5. If anyone has this on disk images, please upload it to somewhere! I have the full Office suite, but I'm not uploading all twenty-something disks if Word is all that's really necessary.

Thank you gentlemen!

I will check out my 6.0.8 systems additions disk and see if that Apple file exchange is in there. If I can't do without 7.0.1, I'll download it instead of looking for 7.5.5 get by without 7.0.1, I'll do that!

6.0.8 is really smooth! Thanks for all the help.

Take care!

6.0.8 rocks! but don't forget the tuneup • (bullet)! It's 7.0.1• that you'll want to be running when you try System 7!

Agreed. 7.5.x under 4 megs of RAM isn't very nice unless you like staring at "Out of memory" dialog boxes.

Hey!

found them on the 6.0.8 sys additions disk like you said (never would have thought of looking there!)

There are two files:

1) Apple File Exchange
2) DCA/RTF MacWrite

Would I just dump both files onto my HD icon? (I realize this sounds really stupid)

(I've actually been wondering how to do this -I end up moving applications from my floppies instead of just copying from them. If I ever need to reinstall them, I'm screwed.
When it comes to putting an application on the HD, how does someone just....uh...copy?

Thanks!

It will copy by default but just copy the mac file exchange folder to the hd if you are holding down the command key it will move instead of copying. Remember I sent you these files so you should have them already .

Yes!

You had sent them, thanks again. I need to stop monkeying with it and just leave it alone (isn't there some fable about curiosity, and a cat?)

I tried saving something in MacWrite, and moving it over onto my PC, hoping that the Apple File Exchange thing would be all the PC needed to read it but I just kept getting that, "Would you like to Format the disk" message. I guess that won't go away unless I move up to sys 7. Oh well.

The Mac is running great now 6.0.8. So, I'm just going to break it in with that and see if that works for me.

If I need to print anything out (which probably won't be very often, I'll either take it to Kinkos , or get a printer for the Mac Classic. Why not? They can't be very expensive and I already got the darn computer anyway!

I was also wondering. I guess the only way to defrag on a Mac Classic is re format the HD and reinstall everything????

Thanks for all the help, y'all!

yes unless you got a older version of norton. Humm you should format them on your pc and when you bring them to your mac make shure you open mac file exchange before you put in the disk or you will get a error.

Cool!

Ok, that worked. I went ahead and saved a text test on ms word on a pc disk.

I then opened File Exchange on the Mac first, then opened it -it didn't spit the disk out this time --yea!!!!!

I messed around with the translation to go from MS Dos - Mac.

At this point, I couldn't open the translated document. When I went to Mac Write, it woudn't give me the parameter to open up a file (the text test).

My problem is that I can't view/edit my translated file once I've brought it over to the Mac HD.

Am I on the right track?

I still don't understand the difference between File Exchange and DCA/RFT/MacWrite, the two files on the sys additions disk.

Patience always appreciated. I know I'm getting warmer!

Yes you are almost there !in the folder with pc exchange on your hd remove all files other than your pc exchange application and whenever you translate it does the "default" translation that in essance copys the file to the mac.

You did the right translation. However, do it with a plain text (Notepad) document instead. If you're going to put a Mac text file on PC, save it as plain text (SimpleText).

You should probably get a printer. They're really cheap. One to look for that will work with classic Macs is the HP Deskwriter. I have one of those from the eighties and it still works perfectly.

Thanks Gentlemen!

That did it! The bridge between my Mac and PC text files has been completed thanks to your help!

HP Deskwriter! I'm on it! I take it that these are old printers? I'll look for one on e-bay if they are. If it's a continued product, I'll swing by COMP USA or something.

One more thing:

Any decent screen savers for 6.0.8? I tried a couple of sites but didn't have any luck.

Thanks again!

Deskwriters are no longer being produced; they were replaced by the HP Deskjets. The only reason I recommend one is that the cartridges are fairly easy to find or refill.

You'll have to get a Mac DeskWriter, like the one at http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2050637983

Be sure you get the power adapter and serial cable with it.

As for screensavers, another one you might like is Pyro!

If you're into music, don't forget to find a really old copy of Finale! My band director last year used a Mac Classic and a Quadra 610 for writing all kinds of musical scores.

Hey Thanks!

I might go for that printer!

However, the description read that the printer will read with OS 7-8.6
do you know if it will work with 6.0.8? I guess it's just a matter of downloading the software if the seller doesn't have it.

Pyro: Do you know where I can find that one?

Thanks again!

Hi there,

I just emailed you a disk image of Suitcase, which contains the Pyro screensaver in the utilities folder.

Thanks Stryder!

Very kind of you. I'm sorry but I didn't tell you my predicament. I have a PC that's connected to the net. That's where all my questions are coming from. My Mac isn't web ready.

What I've had to do in the past, is go to Kinkos (to use their web Macs) to download stuff onto floppies that I eventually put on my Mac Classic. I guess I could just put it on my PC floppie, then take it over to Kinkos to put it back on a Mac format with PC exchange? Does that make sense???

Unfortunately, it's the only way I can put stuff on my Mac. Kind of a pain in the "a"

Thanks!!!!
