I got some Macs from my brother today. Only one was a 68K, a Preforma 637CD that has the worst case yellowing that I have ever seen. It is nearly brown, and it is sticky, I think it must be because they smoke, and the smoke residue got stuck to the outside of the case. I have spent an hour attempting to clean it, but the brown appears to have become permanently attached to the outside of the case. It looks like I will have to paint it to restore its dignity. It does work however, and it has a 32 megabyte RAM simm installed.

I also got a 6100 that I had loaned to him four years ago back. The case on it was badly yellowed too, but it still works.

Unfortunate about the yellowing. There are many recommendations (including in older threads in these forums) for dealing with this. Briefly, I'd say take them apart, remove metal shielding from inside the plastics, then run the plastics through the dishwasher (no heat dry!). Whatever comes off in the dishwasher was dirt/residue. Anything else is chemical yellowing of the plastic from UV. Sand it off, or paint it (or live with it )

As long as you don't make it a desktop replica of the PHKL...

Unfournately veneering a Mac case is a bit beyond my abilitys, I was planning to just sand it and paint it a flat color. Painting it with a camoflauge pattren would be interesting too, and I do not remember seeing a great deal of camoflauge computers other than the ones out of that horrible Hackers movie.

You have to love how all of those "hackers" were lusting over that Powerbook Duo in the one scene though.

Hey, put the plastics through the dishwasher, and while they are watching, take a peice of mac with no yellowing to your home despot and have them colourmatch it, and then airbrush the resulting colour onto your poor mac, and you will have restored it's dignity :)
good luck

I've cleaned yellow cases before. It is really easy. It just requires a bottle of Lysol Tub and Tile cleaner. Just spritz the case, let sit for 5 minutes and wipe. Instant factory clean!

I have found that babywipes work pretty well too, one of my 68k's came from a smoker and I just gave it a wipedown with that and it made a big difference. I like the dishwasher idea, thought I've yet to try it. I'd be sure to remove the RF shields though.

I tried it today, didn't even touch the yellowing on my dead SE/30's case, but the stuff that dropped on my tile floor cleane it up nicely! Maybe I got the wrong stuff it was basin, tub & Tile cleaner in a pump type bottle.

What exactly do you use?

This was a few years ago. Does yours list bleach as an ingredient? Mine was rather foamy, and I used a scrub brush meant for cleaning a shower on it.

Maybe they changed their formula.
