What system are you running? Have you checked the fps on any games?

I plan on installing Jaguar on my B&W G3 350, with 32 MB Radeon, and 1 GB RAM.

ok, my system is a contraband 8500 w/ g3 and pci radeon. I've used mac osx ever since i got it about a year ago. I did the simple hack (which there is a little helper app that will toggle it, find it here http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=16006&db=macosx ) I've noticed significant differences with the system/finder windows and watching the cpu monitor, i can tell that graphic are been handled more by the card. On the description of that helper app they state that there is a 50% performance drop when encoding and decoding video and dvds. I hadn't read that anywhere else. I can't confirm or argue that statement since I don't have a dvd rom and i didn't play with quicktime enough without QE enabled. I'll be turning it off when i have the chance to compare the differences better.

As far as games go, all I've tried is medal of honor. It's slow, choppy and practically unplayable. I don't notice any difference. i'll be trying some other games tonight.

As far as I'm concerned, i'm going to probably stick with QE enabled until i hear from a reliable source that it's not worth it. It makes the system snappier and that's all i want.

There may be some disadvantage...
<hearsay from MAF>
I've heard that the hack slows down performance in stuff that matters more such as DVD burning and video editing.
Also graphical glitches in column view.

Thanks for the link and info. Now I'm really curious... unfortunately I'm flat broke, so it might be a while before I get Jaguar.

I do have a DVD player, and my B&W has a 66 MHz PCI video slot (instead of the standard 33), so I wonder how bad it will be.

I don't really watch many movies on my tower, but I do use Quicktime quite a bit...

Really, all I want is better responsiveness.

I am testing out the effects of QuartzExtreme on PCI on my system. I just got my Radeon PCI today, and I can say that it is totally sweet.

Right now, I have my Radeon in the 66MHz PCI slot, driving a 15" monitor at 1024x768. THe original Rage 128 is in the slot next to it, driving another 15" monitor at 1024x768. On the main screen I have my DVD drive set playing a movie, and I am replying to this thread on the other monitor.

Anyways, from what I have experienced with QE-PCI is that it really doesn't do much overall. I really haven't noticed much of a change, but then again, I am compairing my Rage 128 w/o QE to the Radeon w/QE.

Also, here is the benchmark comparison between the cards in my experience:
All tests were done at 1024x768, 32bit under Mac OS X 10.2 I tested iTunes the most, but also tested Metal Of Honor and Warcraft 3.

iTunes 3 visualizer - small size, faster but rougher, Rage 128 = 30fps
iTunes 3 visualizer - large size, faster but rougher, Rage 128 = 10fps
iTunes 3 visualizer - small size, Rage 128 = 24fps
iTunes 3 visualizer - large size, Rage 128 = 6fps

iTunes 3 visualizer - small size, faster but rougher, Radeon = 45fps
iTunes 3 visualizer - large size, faster but rougher, Radeon = 15fps
iTunes 3 visualizer - small size, Radeon = 30fps
iTunes 3 visualizer - large size, Radeon = 10fps
iTunes 3 visualizer - small size, faster but rougher, Radeon, OpenGL = 70fps
iTunes 3 visualizer - large size, faster but rougher, Radeon, OpenGL = 25fps
iTunes 3 visualizer - small size, Radeon, OpenGL = 40fps
iTunes 3 visualizer - large size, Radeon, OpenGL = 15fps

Warcraft 3 - Rage 128, low graphic settings = about 15-20fps, except when there is a lot of activity
Warcarft 3 - Radeon, low graphic settings = about 25-30fps, except when there is a lot of activity
Warcarft 3 - Radeon, medium graphic settings = about 15fps, except when there is a lot of activity

MOHAA - Rage 128, low graphic settings = about 10fps, peaking 15fps
MOHAA - Radeon, low graphic settings = about 20fps, peaking 25fps
MOHAA - Radeon, medium graphic settings = about 10fps, peaking 15fps

Sorry about the length, but I just wanted to report my findings

yeah, i'm not sure if there are major advantages to have QE enabled other than the fact that the desktop changes are the blend/fade thing like the screen savers. Of course, not much has been optimized yet for QE so when/if that happens it might be a better story.

i'm still leaving it on, doesn't seem to hurt anything
