Well ...Finally got all 128mb of ram to detect. The B2 slot really was a pain in the thumbs to get the ram fully seated. There is an internet connection -- not via my "regular" ISP, but via the PPP that's a fringe of my job. Cleaned the bad extensions out (durn nutscape and aol). I'll probably download iCab or Opera 5 and make it my default browser. (I don't do IE.) Future projects ... Drop in 200mhz processor? PCI card and IDE drive? Additional SCSI drive? Fill my ram slots? (At $10 for 32mb, that's cheap.) 68K's liberated: 1 68Ks adopted to loving homes: 2 PowerMacs adopted: 1 |

NICE! Glad to hear about your 7600. What Mac OS are you running on it? IMHO, on a Mac like that, you need at least 8.5.1, if not 9.x. 9.0.0 and 9.0.4 WILL run nicely enough, but 9.1 is more stable, plus, i've had issues with 9.0.4 in the past. Keep away from 8.6...that OS really wasn't nice to my PowerBook 1400. However, if you have enough money, and time, it IS possible for OS X to run on it. It will be slow on the 604, but SHOULD be bearable. As far as HDs, i'd stay away from SCSI, they're not really worth the cost, and IDE drives are getting cheaper and faster. I haven't tried Opera, but on my iMac, iCab doesn't work with 68kMLA.com. I use Mozilla, which is a VERY nice browser. As you said, also, keep the HELL away from IE. You want this Mac to be as Mordor$oft free as possible. My iMac is, and i don't regret it one bit. -------------------------- "I keep my friends close, but I keep my enemies closer" - Unkown Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

Actually, I find 8.6 to be much more stable than 9.x.IIRC, the 7600 has internal SCSI but not internal IDE, so you'll have to buy a PCI ATA card to use an IDE drive. I'd stick with 8.5 (its what I use on my 8575G3 and 7585e FranckenMacs). My general experience is that older machines do best with about 1/2 or 1 whole rev level less than the maximum supported. Although Apple often tries to make its latest releases compatible with a range of somewhat older machines, the later the OS version, the more resources it hogs.G4From128k by Day: Mild-Mannered Engineer and Trapeze(tm) Artist by Night: Colonel of Truth, Justice, and the Macintosh Way Reserve Officer in 68kMLA Cantankerous Coot Contingent & User of the Hockey Puck Mouse of Radial Symmetry |

8.6 is just a bugfix for 8.5. It doesn't consume any more resources than 8.5, and IMHO it's more stable.Official 68kMLA Music and NeXT Expert OpenStep Page at http://openstep.topcities.com/ Macs Liberated: SE (2), IIsi, PB 145b, Quadra 700, 6100 (2), PB 5300, PowerMac 5400/200, Performa 6400/180 PCs liberated from Windoze: 3 |

Good point. Somehow, I've always skipped the rev+0.1 levels (7.1, 7.6, 8.6, 9.1, etc.) But that may be due to my laziness, rather than logical reasons for not using those versions.G4From128k by Day: Mild-Mannered Engineer and Trapeze(tm) Artist by Night: Colonel of Truth, Justice, and the Macintosh Way Reserve Officer in 68kMLA Cantankerous Coot Contingent & User of the Hockey Puck Mouse of Radial Symmetry |

The best investment for PCI PowerMacs right now is Sonnett's Tempo Trio. You get FireWire, USB 2.0 and ATA-133 all for $180. It kicks ass...and is a much, much better buy than Sonnett's new 800MHz G4 card... 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net Edited by - cinemafia on 27 Aug 2002 12:22:10

OS is 8.1 (it's the only flavor of classic I have that isn't 9.2.1 or 7.5.3). The cost of a full install of 8.6 was close to $75 bucks at every on line vendor I tried, but I found 8.1 for $19 so that's what I went with. And I stay away from mordorsoft even on my PC, which is why it's a stable machine (execept when the chipset overheats). I run Star Office 5.2, Eudora Lite, and Opera 6.03 and have no complaints. I bend over backwards not to run Windows Media -- Winamp, Quick Time, or Real Player. About the only thing I've upgraded from the defaut install is Direct X. Direct X 7 works quite happily with my All In Wonder. 68K's liberated: 1 68Ks adopted to loving homes: 2 PowerMacs adopted: 1 |

Kady, if you want to try OS 9 on the 7600 (and have a broadband connection, as it's a 440MB file), you can download the complete/compressed OS 9.0.4 disk image from my Hotline server: 840av.sytes.netAfterward, you can then download the 9.1 update from Apple's website, it's another 71MB. Trust me...OS 8.x is great for Nubus or bare-bones PowerMacs, but you could really benefit from 9. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net Edited by - cinemafia on 28 Aug 2002 12:54:06

Yeah. Sounds like like you have your system specced out well enough. 9.1 is going to be really nice on your system. Trust me. -------------------------- "I keep my friends close, but I keep my enemies closer" - Unkown Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6

Well, you can run iTunes 2, which is always great. There aren't a lot of good mp3 players that run in anything below 9, and iTunes really kicks their collective arses. Also, if you're ever going to add USB and/or firewire PCI cards, the support for them is much, much better in 9. Lots of little things, like CarbonLib, are going to work better in 9 also. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 My Site: http://cine.sytes.net My Hotline Server: 840av.sytes.net

i agree with choosing 9.1. Right now, you might not think you want it, but you might be upgrading that quickly, it's a great machine to upgrade. Cheap and easy to find parts.I'm the type to choose functionality over speed, i've run osx ever since i got my 8500. it's somewhat slow, but it's worth have the stability and new apps.
