I was all set to liberate that stack of Color Classics this place has acting as dust magnets, but it appears that they want REAL MONEY for them.
Apparently, one of the techs knows how much they can get for them from collectors and threw a wrench into the deal WHILE I was talking to the sales guy!
I kept a poker face although I was itching to whip the guy's ass for being so "helpful."
The sales guy backpedalled and went into some lame "Ohhh, you want the _COLOR_ Classics. I thought you were talking about the regular Classics, which of course we sell for next to nothing. We sell Color Classics for $100 each."
To which I replied jokingly "Hmmm, they look like they've been sitting up there on that shelf for a while. Sure you're not collecting them yourself?"
( I always trot out the "fixing up old color Macs for children" excuse about this time.)
The tech guy ( who by the way is NOT a Machead - in fact he takes great pains to point this out every chance he gets ) had the nerve to interject again about my possibly wanting them to mod like the Japanese collectors.
I'll give him this, he had balls.
I countered with a look that made him shut up and asked "Now, why on earth would I pay you $100 for something that I can get off an auction site already modded for around the same price?"
Then I use his name ( off his name tag) to get his attention ( I love doing this ) and said "You know _Bob_, I'm not really needing any technical questions answered at this point. I don't want to keep you from your important work servicing the _other_ customers. Thanks so much though."
Anyway, I guess it's back to scouring fleaBay for one of these things....

Hmm, you could use the Forceful Remove stragegy, which goes something like this:

You: Hey, Bob! Is that a 1970's Ferrari?
Stupid tech: Where? (he looks around, you take CC and quickly walk out of shop)

What was the original way, again?
Something like:
"Hey is that a F-117A?"
"Where?" *yoink*

HAR™
I thought it was something like:
"Hey, isn't that Halley's Comet?" *yoink™*

and ya, it is funny the way they get so confused and ****ed out when you use the name from the tag, because they forget that they are wearing them [the tags]. I work in customer service, but do not wear a name tag. If anyone wants to know my name, they'll ask.

I wish I had the time and patience to start hacking my own CC. I have a slot-loaded SCSI CD-ROM and a 2.5" SCSI 500MB all ready to do a hack just like this one. All I really need now is a dremel tool, a 545 mobo and one of those nifty 2.5 SCSI drive adaptors available here.

Good luck! Otoh, if I was going to do that to a CC, instead of finding a laptop drive and all, i'd just put the old HD into an external case and plug it in.

I hate tech guys like that, At the RePC near me, the macintosh tech doesn't want to sell a quite valuable g3 all in one. he was even reluctant to let me have a system 7.5.3 cd. I kinda lied and said that "for performance reasons, on my older macintoshes, system 7.5.3 would be the best for me to use" really, I knew that they had originals, and wanted one for myself. :) It seems that in that store, you can leave thigs that aren't being sold our in the open. I know what's "wring" with the g3, he didn't want to tell me, and he said he knew, I'm SURE that either it didn't have a vital component (RAM, HDD) or he didn't have an Operating system to load on it, next time I go there, if he's there, I'm going to offer up a COPY of my os 8.1 CD, in trade for something like a 4400 or 85/8600, maybe even the g3AIO :)
