I just bought one on eBay for 5 bucks. Pretty soon I'll be surfing at 128kbps! No DSL in my area, and my ISP already supports ISDN modems so muwahahahahaha! Anyhow, I don't really know a whole lot about them. It looks like I have to use 2 phone lines to obtain the 128k. Any info about ISDN would be greatly appreciated!________________ foetoid, that's (fee-toy-d) http://www.foetoid.doesntexist.com |

An ISDN modem is, essentially, two standard analog modems that both dial out at the same time to hit your ISP. The ISP, assuming that it supports ISDN, sees those two dial-ups and sends them both a normal amount of bandwidth. Once those two streams get back to your ISDN modem, it combines them into one stream, which, of course, is converted into TCP/IP by your Mac.It was the absolute cutting edge back in the early 90's when i used to surf Genie on my PowerBook 160 over a 2400 baud internal modem! You should see real-world feeds of 10-13KB/s or better! Not a lot faster than regular dial-up now a days, but much more reliable. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

Doesn't it require a digital phone line?

ISDN is Digital not Analog. It stands for "Industry Standard Digital Network" IIRC. It basically picks up the reciever and spews the phone number at the exchange in binary, which then connects it to the ISP in a flash. No making stupid noises down the line here! Also it's symetrical bandwidth so you get 128kbps upstream AND downstream at the same time. I have 64k ISDN and, despite being only 8kbps faster it makes a 56k modem look stupid. 128kbps ISDN conncets two lines - one 128k upstream and one 128k downstream.-- Mark Benson FlatPackMacs http://fpm.gotdns.com 2nd Lieutenant - 68kMLA, LC Quartermaster Flat Packing Macs for 68k MLA airlift excercises Macs Liberated = 14! |

My ISP also supports ISDN ... for about $100 a month. Which is a complete freaking joke when they'll DSL me for $50.And the phone company people will have to come to your house and futz with some wiring to make it work. There are reasons ISDN ("it still does nothing") never caught on. 68K's liberated: 1 68Ks adopted to loving homes: 2 PowerMacs adopted: 1 |

It's much cheaper to get ISDN here - about £12 a month ($20), our phone company offered us it as they do not support DSL in my areas (we live out in the sticks) but we are within range for ISDN. It's pretty cool and super-stable (even more so that DSL at least) but some people do want to charge way too much for it.-- Mark Benson FlatPackMacs http://fpm.gotdns.com 2nd Lieutenant - 68kMLA, LC Quartermaster Flat Packing Macs for 68k MLA airlift excercises Macs Liberated = 14! |

Just read this thread, so it may be too late, unless this guy's trash isn't picked up Fridays, but here's some ISDN equipment getting tossed in Ann Arbor, Michigan: quote:
Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 10:58:04 -0400 Subject: [MM] how to get rid of unwanted ISDN equipment? From: Steve Klein <klein@pwb.com> Message-Id: <8FA81C02-B5DF-11D6-B801-00050235CD7A@pwb.com>We have four work-at-home employees whom we just switched from ISDN to cable modem. Now I have all the ISDN equipment I don't need. I can't find any charity that wants them, and there's no market for them on ebay. I offered them on comp.dcom.isdn, but got no takers. So these are free to the first taker. Here's what we have: Qty Description --- ----------- 1 Symplex DR-1 4-line ISDN router 2 Symplex RO-1 GEU adapters (ethernet only, no POTS ports) 2 Symplex RO-2 adapters (ethernet + POTS A & B) In addition to other standard features, these things route AppleTalk. You can get technical details from http://www.symplex.com/ On their web site they are offering the DR-1 for $900.00, and you can have one for free. If they aren't claimed by this time tomorrow, they're going in the trash. Unless I get some truly useful information that's worth saving for posterity, I won't bother posting a SUMMARY. -- steve klein it manager pwb marketing communications 350 south main street, suite 350 ann arbor, michigan 48104 usa +01 734.995.5000 tel +01 734.995.5002 fax
