HELP!

My dad is on a crazy rampage aboot power usage and the HL server. (don't worry, it ain't going anywhere) But still, I want to be able to defend myself, anyone know how to figure out power usage?

The server is a 6500/250 incase that helps any. Its so quiet and there is so little its doing, I can't imagine it drawing that much power!

There is only one path and that is the path that you take, but you can take more than one path.

Well, lessee...a 6500/250 uses 752.4 BTU's per hour, which doesn't seem to bad. Even a G4 cube uses more than that.

I'm not positive I did the math right, but from what I figured, it would take nearly two full months (a hair over 55 days) for the 6500/250 to use up 1 kilowatt hour of energy. I don't know what they charge for 1 KWH in your part of the universe, but out here in Cali it's something like 3 cents.

Oops, I did the math wrong. 1 KWH = 3412 BTU, not 1 million BTU's. So, with that in mind...a 6500/250 generates 1 KWH every 4 and a half hours. Even at California rates, which are probably the highest in the nation, that's still only $0.16 worth of electricity every day.

that sounds reasonable . . . let's see . . .

*eschews web based data retrieval methods and pulls the handiest, most useful reference work in geekdom from one of the drawers of the rolling tool cabinet.*

1 BTU = 0.000292875 Kilowatt-hours

1 BTU = 0.000292830 Kilowatt-hours (Int.)

*thinks: must be those whacky aussies throwing the calculations off! *

Speaking of power consumption, i've got a story!

First I'll mention that I live in a finished attic above the kitchen. Since I live up here I have my own window airconditioning unit.

Well, yesterday my mom was making dinner cause she's cool and all that and i was taking a nap since i'm lazy and things went to hell. Since my room is above the kitchen we share a breaker. Well, this was what was running in my room:

8500
17" display
Hub of doom (tm)
!00 watt stereo amp
Ceiling fan
IIci
Q950
15" display
Air conditioner
and little stuff, like alarm clocks ( yes, i need 2 to wake me up)

In the kitchen was all the friggin lights and the microwave.

You can probably do the math and we popped the breaker. This is nothing new, it happens every once and a while, Usually my mom warns of the microwave and i kill the airconiditoner and everybody is happy.

When the 8500 started back up, it wouldn't start into OSX, i was getting a broken folder icon. To make a really long (like 3.5 hour long) story short, All i need to do was reinstall the bootx and extensions with xpostfacto and cross my fingers. What ended up happening is that I installed 10.2 beta 6c115 and so far so good. Of course I know about 115 is the GM and all that, so i'm feeling good.

The point of the story incase you skipped to the bottom, is it might cost $.16 or something, but your house has to contain it all.

Ahhhh... that was a good rant. i feel better

Ahh yes, but see i personally fixed my breaker problem! When rewireing the basement for the massive power usage down there (which is funny he doesnt complain aboot but yeah...), I put my room on a its own seperate circuit. I can now run Nine macs and all the appropriate monitors without a dim in the lights!

~The Penguin

P.S.- My dad is now saying it costs $.10 per KWH up here....? more than CA?!
