c115 or c115a c115a is the retail one, so if you have c115 there is no point on upgrading.

Jag-uar and OS Ten, I'm british - it makes sense that way

As for getting the thing I'm an ADC member so I'm not buying it but it seems ADC CDs to get to UK people via a slow boat to China.

I can't wait - it'll make me love my iBook all the more, especially now my dad and I have fixed the power connector up better that it was when it was new

We at uni have taken to calling it "Jag-wire" so other people don't confuse it with the animal of the same name...
And I'll be getting it Monday! (and installing it on my shiny new iPod! )

Actually, I am almost possible that the only thing that goes to c115a is Jaguar Server. AFAIK, retail Jaguar only goes to build c115.

<grizzled veteran of the O.S. wars mode>

ALWAYS ACQUIRE A LARGER NEW HDD BEFORE INSTALLING NEW SYSTEM SOFTWARE!!!!!!

use the occasion to set up everything you really use on a new drive and transfer only what you really need to the new drive after it is up and running well with all your apps and utilities and you've determined that a bug-fix rev on a bootable CD isn't going to be put into the upgrade boxes real soon now!

after you're done transferring your data, unhook and store the old drive in a safe place as a BOOTABLE, FULLY FUNCTIONAL BACKUP THAT COULD BE PLACED INTO ANOTHER MACHINE IF NECESSARY!

</grizzled veteran of the O.S. wars mode>

jt's rule of thumb: wait until the bootable bugfix rev. CD hits the retail boxes on the shelves at tekserve before even THINKING about acquiring new system software. if impatience or impulse regulation controls fail, revert to grizzled veteran mode.

That's good advice! I'm hoping to upgrade to a bigger drive in my TiBook soon (who would've thought that 20 gigs could seem so tiny!?), in which case my current drive will move to my PowerBook 1400... drooollll....
If I can hold out, I'll backup my TiBook onto one of the drives in the PowerMac G4/733 at work (it's got about 150 gigs free!), but I might just go ahead... risky, I know...

Well, it came, I backed-up, I installed, and now I post!
So far, no problems (insert frantic knocking on wood here), and I (mostly) like the changes. Everything seems zippier, the new spining curser is pretty neat, and so on. It's easier to notice the little annoying things, so here are the ones I've spotted so far:
  • Font smoothing seems kinda wonky- pages in IE/Mozilla now scroll noticibly slower, plus all the fonts on the desktop look... wrong, somehow. Really strange... sigh.

  • Speakable Items is now DOA- it only 'hears' 1/10 of my commands! Granted, I never really use this a whole lot, but it's a bummer that it's not working right.

  • Now, when I use the keyboard volume buttons, instead of using the default system sound, it now plays this massivly annoying 'click' sound! Arrrgh! Granted, you can turn it off, but you can't change it, which would be great.
  • Umm... I was under the impression that iCal was coming with 10.2, but it's a download next month, I guess. I've been waiting to be able to use the calandar feature on my iPod already, but no dice... yet...

  • [*]Worst of all: The Happy Mac is gone! NOOOOOOO! The happy mac that been shown at bootup since 1984 has now been replaced by a bland Apple-logo and little spinner-thingie. Sigh. I want my happy mac back!!!

Okay, I'll get off the rant-box... for now....

Well my copy of Jaguar is winging it's way to me by snail mail from CA, the mailing broadcast says non-US subsribers to ADC should get it in 3-10 working days. That makes it Wednesday next week to Friday the following week. I'm now doubly excited as I just bought a Rev. 2 B&W G3 Tower, which is expected to hit ground zero at about Thursday next week so I might even have 10.2 by then (shyeah right!!). WWWWWWWOOOOOHHHHHHHOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Can't wait. I'll have an ideal Apple set-up, a G3 and an iBook, just as Mr. Jobs intended it back in 1999, both running Jaguar, as Mr. Jobs intended in 2002. I hate Steve Jobs - he's far too good at spending my money for me GRRR!!!!

Well, I'm happy to say that, after a restart and a bit of Disk Doctor-ing, everything is running a little more smoothly- fonts look normal again, etc. Still stuck with the Apple-logo-in-place-of-the-Happy-Mac-icon, but other then that, things are okay. Oh, on that subject, when I booted from the Norton CD, the Happy Mac was back! I guess that means that it's located in the OS X boot software, and has not changed some sort of ROM code in the computer... which, to my mind, means that it's gonna be possible to hack it back to it's former glory!
Also, I'm having some troubly with the "Screen Effects" pref pane- it seems to cause the whole System Prefs app to crash, almost at random. I'm able to trigger it every time by putzing with the settings on 'StratWars' one of my all-time favorite screensavers, so maybe it's a bug with older savers and the way 10.2 handles screen savers. Oh, and all the 'stock' savers are gone! No more Beach, Forest, Cosmos, etc! I can't belive they're gone! Sigh (again).
Lastly, now it seems that I must log in at boot, every time, even though I made sure that the settings are properly set to allow me to skip log-in. I'm not sure what to make of that one...
On the plus side, here are a few more little changes that I think are just swell:

  • Now, when I'm dialing into my ISP, up in the menu bar it shows the dialing status, i.e. "Dialing...", "Connecting...", or the total time connected so far. Very nice! This has eliminated the only reason I ever opened the 'Internet Connect' app.

  • Now, when you open a folder/drive in the Finder, it sorta 'zoooms' out at you, in a very pleasing way. I'm sure folks on older machines will by annoyed at yet another bit of eye-candy that will probably slow things down even more, but on my TiBook 500, it's really smooth.

  • Finally, when you hit "Command-F" to find a file in the Finder, it actually works!!!, without making you wait for Sherlock to load. It's simply wonderful- harkens back to the days of yore, when I had 200 files on my Mac Plus, and searching only took a second or two... very, very, very nice! :-)

  • Okay, I'll keep the observations rolling in as I see 'em....
    :-)

Do you need one of those upgrade cards that came with OS X and pre-10.2 macs to get an upgrade CD? I can't seem to remember what happened to those cards, I hope the Apple Store doesn't give me any trouble.

Exactly. This is an even number revision, like 7.6.

Anyway, I was suprised to hear that the AppleStore in Nedlands alone sold out of 85 copies on Saturday!

I have to say, so far it's been worth the serious amount of dough for the upgrade. Granted, as a student, I was able to get it for 'only' $69.99 (+ $10 shipping), but even so, this was still pretty big purchase for me: $80 = one or two textbooks!
Anyway, so far, everything's gone really well with the upgrade, and even though I'm not that impressed with iChat (I've been using Fire for a while, as the only people I chat with are on MSN anyway), the whole system seems so much faster, with fewer random slow-downs all over the place. Sure, there are plenty of little bugs left (opening a folder with a lot of files causes the Finder to quit/restart- this happens every time I open my MP3 folder, which has over 1,500 files), but you see the little spinning cursor of death less and less, and only for a moment when you do see it.
I can only drool, thinking of what might be coming in 10.2.1 or 10.3... mmmmmmm.... Puma......

SpaceBoy
PS I had a startling moment the other day (after installing Jaguar)- I saw that I've got 150, 000+ files on my hard-drive! Wow, Bob, wow. I've come a long way since I thrilled at the thought of 160 megs of drive space on my souped-up Mac Plus, huh?

Well I have to say, having had Jag-wire (that joke is starting to stick everywhere now!) for a few days and thoroughly beaten it with a big stick on my G3 and ibook it's a very nice OS. I did manage to kill it playing Quake III Area, but that's more likely Q3 than OS X 10.2!!

iChat, Mail and the Finder all rcok bells. The new Address Book STILL sucks though, it's really clunky.

Now all we need is iCal and iSync and we will be sortedddd.

Agreed! I'm really happy- again, it's been worth the chunk of cash, to get such a dramatic speed boost. Plus, I've just signed on to ".Mac" last night (I've been using iTools for about a year), and the extra features are great, IMHO. Man, what will I ever do with 100 megs of iDisk space?

Well, I was forced to buy Jaguar after my ibook kept giving me kernel panics on startup, and none of my boot disks worked . Speed has improved, but the DevTools are giving me problems. GCC doesn't work!
