I'm trying to get my 7600 on line and I've finally figured out what the problem is. I have a version of macTCP that is too old to be supported by my ISP. I need macTCP 2.0.6 or above.

All my isp says is that it can be downloaded from apple's site.

I can't find it on apple's site.

I downloaded and burnt to a CD the only thing that mentioned macTCP 2.0.6 (the document description said something about DNS update. When I got it into my 7600 and clicked on the only thing that wasn't a read-me, it dialed my ISP and immediatly I got an authentication failure.

I had a bear of a time getting the correct modem drivers onto the 7600 (manually having to drag the updated drivers to the right burried seven layers deep folder is not -- well, W98 sure has 8.1 beat on that level)

Can somebody please post me a direct link to the software that I need and give me instructions telling me exactly which folder I've got to drop it into? Or if I have downloaded the right thing, then what exactly do I do with it?

Thanks

Have you tried TCP/IP instead of macTCP? I know that is avalible on apple's web site.

Is there a specific version I should look for?

Here is the wording on my ISP's site:

"MacTCP 2.0.4, Open Transport 1.0.8 or earler are not supported. Open Transport is included with Mac OS 7.6 or higher and can be downloaded from Apple's Website at www.apple.com"

(I'm loging in just fine from my iBook in OS X.)

If you do still have hassles, Open Transport 1.11 and 1.12 (the latter needs the former first) give you the same kind of (and wonderfully easy!) networking that's in 7.6.1 through to 9.2... it's always worked way well for me anyhoo...

they're linked to on my 605's page at:

http://dana.kicks-ass.org/605/os.html

it's under the section for installing 7.1 - but it works for later versions too :)

Also, Classic Networking, which MacTCP is a part of, doesn't work under Mac OS 7.6.1 onwards. This is a Good Thing. Open Transport's TCP/IP control panel is MUCH better than MacTCP.

I didn't know that bit (about 7.6.1). I do prefer the Open transport PPP and TCP/IP control panels more than the earlier ones - though I only really run networking on machines that have the ram to handle it. I haven't touched the older boxies for AGES - like the LCIIs and the Classic II.

I think it's time to break out the Classic :D

Well has anyone used Selectric? you'd never go back to mac.

I used to use Gemulator on the pc, cos you just arn't allowed freedom on other machines(not st) Gemulator gave me acces to everything on Windows(yes even hidden files if I so wished) & I could un-delete too!

Honestly I could live with mac if I had Selectric(replacement file selector)

But I want an st emulator for my mac ala Gemulator.

Hehe...i know what you mean abuot the old '030s...other than my beloved LCIII, i hadn't broken out any of 'em for ages until this weekend...god i can't wait till i get a new floppy for the Hackintosh (LC475)...then the LCII's hood and SuperDrive are going straight back onto the LCII, and so is a copy of System 6.0.8!

I'm using OS 8.1

I have open transport 1.3.1 on it.

But when I did a find file type search for macTCP it found a read-me file for version 1.*.* which lead me to assume that this is what I have on my 'puter.

Exactly. Its not compatible with Open Transport, and there's no reason to...Open Transport's TCP/IP control panel is a LOT better!!! That readme that you speak of, Kady, is probably a leftover from a System 7 install...

Except for the fact that the disk was scrubbed clean when I got it.

But there's more than 1 way to defur a feline, and I was just reminded by a co-worker that as a university employee one of the fringes is a PPP account through the U.

I just got done talking to the folks at the 'puter help desk and have the dial up instructions in my hand.

Incidentally, what do I see when I walk into the office? Oh, 17 flat panel Apple monitors. Granted, they could have adapters to make them windows compatable, but I'll bet that at System Computing Services, the desktops have a flavor or OS X on them.
