Just so you know, the DVD-RAM format isn't for video, it's for data only. In other words, you can use it to store data just like you would a CD-R, however, you cannot put video on it and have it playback in a standard DVD player. Worse yet, you also cannot store uncompressed audio on it and have it play back in a standard CD player. So, really, what you have is sort of a 5.2GB, write-once Jaz disk. That being said, there is really only one thing that's stopping a 68k from using such a drive. And, that is there's no software that I know of that will write to it. The DVD-RAM format wasn't introduced until a few years ago, long after major 68k development stopped, and getting an app that would be able to write to it would be difficult. I'm not going to say impossible, since, thanks to markymark, we have mp3 decompression on 68k's, but it's not going to be easy. 68k optical writing support stops with Toast 4.1.2 and NeroCD. It may be possible to re-write or modify either of these apps to write to DVD-RAM, but I'd have no idea where to start. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! is that an O.S. limitation, a CPU instruction set or entire 040/PPC code base limitation? (*sigh* . . . didn't bother to look for drivers for my IIfx! )doesn't look good, unless you can run 8.6, Roxio's site said they only support Apple's DVD-RAM drives, but LaCie implies otherwise: http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers/infos.cfm?id=4ACD1130-BCB5-11D5-97E70090278D3ED0 interesting DVD (not DVD-RAM) FAQ: http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html jt ™. Yep, even "older" variants Toast 5.x will definitely write to DVD-RAM's with a patch, but Toast 5.x is PPC only. I don't think it's impossible to patch Toast 4.x for it, but it would require one to write/code the patch themselves, cause LaCie/Roxio/Adaptec/anyone else sure aint gonna do it.666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

68kmac Anti development sources(Apple themselves I believe) are bad news for us. I really feel that we need liberation from them. We need knew development but we need to keep alot of what "used" to "make mac a mac". On my STfm, with no hard drive just 1 720k floppy, 2 1/2 meg ram & 8mhz 68000 cpu I can play AVI & MOV, I am still struggling to play AVI on my Quadra 840av.?????????????? shaktiman Quadra 840av 128MB ram 2MB vram cd drive(caddy),1 caddy!:-)1.44 floppy drive, inject :-(1.2 gig drive 2 monitors 15" & 14" os 8.1 56k modem Stylewriter 1200 Zodiac speakers Umax 1220s scanner 3 year old son! |

Don't we all wish! Unfortunately, any 68k development must now come from a very small niche of the private sector...people like us, who have no funding, and, worse yet, no paying customers! quote: I am still struggling to play AVI on my Quadra 840av.??????????????
You can stop trying. MS/Intel has changed the AVI codec so many times that even the newest Macs running WMP 7 can't playback the video. But, that's just one reason to have a PC around (or a fast Mac with a copy of VPC), as they aren't totally useless. 666th poster and 666th thread-creator Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 7 I Have No Legs! |

AVIs on PC? Don't make me laugh! If you have OS X, Video Lan Client is what you need. It works with just about EVERY Divx, other AVI, DVD or VCD. It's on VersionTracker.~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0
