Yeee ha!

I've liberated my first 68k mac! Found an LCIII for $10 ($5 because it was 50% off day) at a thrift shop.

Have not yet had a chance to take the little pizza box home and fire her up.

The LCIII is one of the more usable "Pizza Boxes". I had several of these and gave them to friends. It is amazing how fast they seem with 7.1 on them. There were also Apple IIe cards for these to run ye ole Apple stuff.

Sniff :( I plugged it in and nothing happened. I think it may be dead.

I carefully slid open the case and sprayed the dustblaster, but it was pretty clean inside. I have no idea how to tell if it's been stripped or not.

Now, here comes my stupid question ... The keyboard and monitor I hooked up belonged to my 7600. Would this cause a problem?

did you flip on the power switch in the back?

every once in a while my microquadra gets very stubborn about booting up when i hit the power key without flipping the switch!

You should have no problems with a the keyboard and monitor from the 7600 (as long as the monitor supports the lower resolutions of the LCIII). Even if the monitor is the wrong resolution, you should be some sort of start-up sound and hear the harddisk spin-up.

(Hey jt, I assume that your "back-button-double-posting" means that you have to flip the power switch twice? Either that, or no wonder you are nearing 2000 posts.)

Kady Mae, I do hope that your LCIII joins the living, you got a good price on a great little pizza box.

oops! the forums are responding VERY slowly again! that was my second second back-button-booboo today! except it was really the "did i actually press that freakin' post button syndrome!?!!!" this time around.

btw: i have considerably more than 2k posts . . . but we don't talk about that!

Aaah...the LCIII, my first Mac. Congrats on your new liberation. I hope you have fun with your first 68k. As far as it being dead is concerned, are you sure that there is a good PRAM battery in there? If there's not, the Mac will play dead. However, there's a trick to force it to start up without a PRAM batt. Switch it on, then off, then back on again. If that doesn't get it to boot, come back and we'll give you some more information.

Just got done talking to Space Boy (hard at work on one of the few macs in the building) and he also suggested that I try the PRAM battery.

I'll head off to the local battery store this evening.

Cool. Be sure the one you buy is a 3.6v half-AA lithium batt. You should be able to pick one up at Ratty Shark or some place like that.

oops! forgot the dialup disclaimer, there are images in this post, but they probably aren't TOO bad on dialup, they're small.

speaking of PRAM Batts, check these possibilities out in my PRAM Batt Pack Hack thread on fritter.

gotta figure out some kind of charging system for them tho . . .

Hmm you've just reminded me of something....

A few months ago, one of my friends picked up a 6100 DOS. The PRAM batt was flat, and when i told him about the type of battery needed, he told me that it would be better if he was to simply rip the plug off a 3.6v power adapter and solder the wires to the respective battery terminals. I, on the other hand though, wouldn't want to botch up a Mac mobo like that unless i had no choice. Really, its your call.
