Ok, in my room i have had my dad's (linksys 5port) hub that's connected the router downstairs. today at the surplus dealer I bought a "new" hub. It's a synoptics lattishub 2814-04 made by bay networks (cost me $16, "$1 per port" said the sign). It's a 16 port concentrator, which i believe is just a fancy name for a hub. it's got fiber tx and rx ports as well as 4 expansion ports in the back. it's working currently without a problem. It's a little over-kill and loud (huge fan), but you never know when i'll need an advanced management rack mount hub. ok, here's my question. Does anybody out there have any knowledge of this brand of hub and know of what terminal app i should use to administer it. It's got both a 9 pin serial and a big rs-232 port on the front. Thanks for any thoughts.

p.s. i didn't know if this qualified as balloon help since it's not a mac. sorry, if i was incorrect.

it's likely to be considered a peripheral, but it's fine in here by me. marchie'll probably launch it if it's not or just for the heck of it if he feels like it!

BWAAHAHAAHAHA!!!!

Today I made my own mac serial to db9 adapter to plug into the service port of this hub. After a few hours of researching terminal apps and reading the users guide to my hub I can now administrate via a terminal app!!!!!

There's not much to do besides simple admin stuff, but it's still sweet. If it wasn't so loud, it might be te coolest thing ever!

$16! LOL! I did a quick google on "synoptics lattishub 2814-04" that revealed that it originally sold for $1700 to $2200! I suspect that it has got a large amount of digital networking magic inside given the presense of optical fiber ports and the price.

Nice haul and great hack!
