Ok, it's this is only going to be interesting to a few people, but i've made quite a few discoveries tonight while getting my servers and everything setup. I'll list them to keep it simple:

1) the hotline tracker uses port 5498 incase anybody ever needs to know. It was a pain to find. Tracker will be flaky for a few days til i decide what to do as far as a final config.

2) Ipnetrouter isn't all that bad, even though I've talked poorly of it. After I read the manual and did everything step by step it worked and worked well.

3) my linksys router seems to be actually routing the incoming ports without crapping itself. My goal was to assign a software router to the dmz host on my hardware router with the hope that everything would be outside the firewall, and it was, except that incoming requests were being zapped because the software router had no idea where to send it unless i specified (which i could do with the hardware router, so i'm sticking with that for now.)

4) The Eudora Internet Mail Server (it's free, find my other post for a link) seems to being working well. i have it working both Tx and Rx fine using dyndns.org's service. If anybody wants help with it, email me. I'm going to be spending the remaining free .mac time testing the address, just to be sure.

5) I currently have a 950 with 160 meg ram and a 3 gig drive as the email server. If there is enough interest, i might offer "official" 68kmla email addresses. I remember this was mentioned before and i don't know what came of it.

Hmm... i think that's it...

err..
6) if anybody ever needs a port assignment go here: http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

it occurred to me that nobody would want to entrust their email server to somebody they don't know, and i agree that could be a bad idea. my goal is that i can take this 950 with me to college and have it follow me around ensuring an email address with a long life. Since i can't guarantee anything, i will be more than happy to point people in the right direction to set one up for themselves. So whatever floats your boat...

Yeah, the problem with that is the nature of the serving that we are doing: forums on one server, with the actual domain on another server with an invisible frame and a redirect to here.
If something can be done fairly easily to get a working redirection of email address solution, let me know. I'm not too knowledgable about these things.

Hey ~Coxy, who/what/where do u use for the redirect service. Some people offer different routing options and all so i dunno what approach should be taken.

There is only one path and that is the path that you take, but you can take more than one path.

If you go to www.68kmla.com and "View Source", you'll see what I mean.
I believe that the top level is hosted by NameSecure (the rego people) and was included in the registration/redirecting costs.

I get exactly the same with www.danamania.com - and to make any of my site bookmarkable, I have to immediately escape frames when people visit, something I only do on the main page at the moment - and it doesn't work in all browsers. What I'd like is to point www.danamania.com to dana.kicks-ass.org (the actual real addy of my server) in a more DNS type way.

That's something I have no clue about yet, however :D

Here's an idea that I know would work, but it would be a pain, maybe somebody can build from this.

www.68kmla.com is all redirected towards penguin using dyndns.org (or something similar)

He has an email server that takes care of incoming/outgoing emil via port 25/110.

For http requests he can have a simple web server (port 80) redirect to the forums address.

It's 2 hops, but it would work.

That's just a thought.

Another one that i'm thinking of is do something like _________@mail.68kmla.com I remember reading somewhere that some dns systems can redirect something like that. Just a thought, i'm thinking of some other possibilities. This evening I'll read up on it.

The 2 hop thing wouldn't work for me though, well atleast i wouldnt want to do it. I can't guarentee that i would have abosolute 100% uptime (ok so maybe like 99% ) And i don't want that to interfere with the forums. I also already have my site hosted off of ther eand it would be just uber messy to do all that redirecting.

On my personal site, I have many third level domains going to either different addy's or different folders on my server. If you can set up third level domains ~Coxy, this would be all we would need. It would be as simple as setting mail.68kmla.com to go to the addy 68kmail.no-ip.com. I think...

I'm gonna head over and read some shtuff at name secure and see what else I can dig up.
