My question: why is the actual transfer speeds never near the quoted top speed for apple networking?. For example, http://www.macaddict.com/magazine/1997_11/network.html says that Localtalk maxes at 230kbps, The fastest I ever got it was 11 kilobytes per second. I connected a 10base? Quadra to a 10/100 iMac 333 and it maxed at 500k/s. I tried again today with basilisk using 10/100 card in the PC and the 10/100 on the iMac 333, but again, it was only 500k/s. Why can't I get anything faster than 500k/s?. ------------------ Mac SE 4/40 Mac Classic II 4/40 Mac IIx 8/160 Mac IIvi 8/260 Mac Quadra 650 32/260 Mac Quadra 650 64/350 via basilisk II iMac 333 How you like d'em apples?! |

Keep in mind overhead, the difference between kilobits and kilobytes, and the fact that you'll never get full quoted network speeds. ~Coxy - Leader, Tactical Operations Unit Mayor of NuBus City v3.0

There are 8 bits in a byte. Kb and KB are quite different. ~Coxy said it...{ candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 3} { My baby: Q660av } |

Do I have to switch some preferences somewhere to get faster speed?, maybe something about duplex?. I understand the localtalk speeds but, 10mb= 10 000 000 bits/8=1 250 000bytes or 1.25MB 100mb=100 000 000 its/8=12 500 000bytes or 12.5MB I'm only getting 500k/s, that's less than half the max amount on the lowest setting. Both computers have 10/100 enet cards. They're connected to each other by a single cable, no hub. What's the deal? ------------------ Mac SE 4/40 Mac Classic II 4/40 Mac IIx 8/160 Mac IIvi 8/260 Mac Quadra 650 32/260 Mac Quadra 650 64/350 via basilisk II iMac 333 How you like d'em apples?! |

i don't think 100bT works on a crossover cable, maybe that's why it's dropping down to 10baseT speeds. dunno tho, that might be gigabit or i might be mistaken entirely.good working rule of thumb: NEVER expect more than half of the advertised performance of ANYTHING! jt ™. Is that before or after the generic "computers suck"? :)
I'd say before. Like as in: NEVER expect more than half the advertised performance of ANYTHING! Computers suck! -------------------------- "I keep my friends close, but I keep my enemies closer" - Unkown Warrior maclover5 68k Macintosh Liberation Army Number of 68ks Liberated: 6
