Remember that as yet unnamed powermac 7600 I've mentioned in a few posts? The one I got at my U's surplus auction?

I will be attempting the boot in about 15 minutes. I rearranged my desk last night and made room for it. This morning I cleaned it up. (Holy moly was it dusty inside!)

I've discovered that I didn't get a surplus machine from the Film Studies department. :( In side there's 32 megs of ram, plus some really short little ram sticks that I presume must be the v-Ram. The Hard drive is a 2 gig scsi model.

And yes folks, I will be posting here looking for a little hand holding. I need to get a modem -- or at least find an adapter that works with my zoom external modem. Then I gotta find out how to import/export video ...

Cross your fingers.

1. Yes, those short sticks are the VRAM.

2. To capture video, you use a program that comes with the Mac OS called Apple Video Player. On the Custom Install screen, its under "Multimedia". To export it, you should just be able to hook it up to a TV or VCR and be on your way.

Hope this helps.

"Phoenix" lives!

I just got done installing OS 8.1 and Claris Works 4 on it. My next steps are to bump the ram up from 32 to at least 64 -- 128 more likely -- and then to get a modem.

Can somebody reccomend me a good 56k modem? Both external and internal are ok.

Apple System Profiler will tell you. Its under the Apple menu. Also, i believe that Swann's "MacSurfer" modems are good, solid external 56k modems, judging from experience.

I dunno- I have a US Robotics external 33.6 that's never given me anything but trouble... Maybe I just got a bad one, but I'm not impressed. I also have a Zoom External 56k, which seems to be a really nice modem- I got it on eBay a couple years back pretty cheap, and it came with a PC-to-Mac serial connector.
Hope this helps!

3???

That sounds wrong. Does the 7600 have onboard VRAM or is she seeing the L2 cache as a VRAM?

Okay

When I opened it up, I saw 2 banks of ram slots

One smaller bank was closer to the back of the machine. It had 2 small sticks in it.

The longer bank ran almost the width of the case, and was divided into two parts.

One part had all long slots and 1 small slot. The small slot had a stick in it.

Right next to it, in the *other half of the bank* was a long stick of ram that had a sticker in it clearly identifying it as a 32 meg stick.

I wondered why the other short stick wasn't hanging out with its buddies, but since it was also clear that this case had never been opened, I decided not to move it.

Sounds like 2mb of VRAM

The small one is the Level2 cache. The rest are for memory

A single 32 DIMM of regular memory.

Since there is only one, it is not interleaved.

It's right where it needs to be.

Okay, ram question.

Does it take FPM or EDO ram? Crucial.com says FPM, but several folks on EBay are saying EDO works in the 7600.

The 7600 is supposed to be able to take either EDO or FPM DIMMs. However, I advise you to stick with FPM for a few reasons:

(1) You can't mix the two in the same machine (unless you want it to crash all the time ). The 32MB you already have in there is almost certainly FPM.

(2) There have been anecdotal reports of EDO RAM not being as stable as FPM in these machines.

(3) It's rare that EDO will be cheaper than FPM--usually it's the same price or a little higher than FPM.

(4) Following on #3, the 7600 cannot take advantage of the slight speed advantage EDO RAM offers over FPM, so there's no reason to pay a premium for it.

(5) Never listen to anyone on eBay

The best places to look for RAM, IMHO, are http://www.ramseeker.com and the Low End Mac LEM-Swap email list.
