FWB toolkit should handle it, right? Argh! Formatting my new 4.2 gig hard drive has been a real trial, let me say. This post is a slight rant and I'll bet no one cares, but there is some (small) advice at the end. Stick it out...It's a seagate drive, so I wasn't too surprised when Drive Setup couldn't do the job. What's with that, anyway? Even the version that came with OS 9 wouldn't do it. Oh well. I tried a version of FWB HD Toolkit that came on a 7.6 CD I had. No luck. It told me to do a low level format when trying to quick formatting and told me to do a bad block scan when trying to do low level format, but it couldn't scan until it had been formatted. Helpful, very helpful. SCSI probe recognized the drive, but couldn't mount anything because there was no volume, as if that would do me any good. I wasn't sure if Mt. Anything could format, so I tried that, but it can't. It couldn't even give me any info about the drive. That surprised me. I headed over to Gamba's site to see what sort of formatters I could pick up there. I read a bit about some hack that copies resources and basic drivers, but it seemed like a big pain. I got a copy of Lido 7.56(?) from gamba, but it found some personal issue with the drive and refused to work on it. Next came Micronet Utility. It froze when trying to scan the drive. Oh, I almost forgot. Early on I disconnected the startup disk (so the lowest bus numbered drive would be the blank one) and inserted a boot floppy with the all-drives HDSC Setup. It failed to start from the disk, though, and gave me a flashing question mark. I didn't feel like fooling with that option. So, here was the score of failed attempts: -FWB HD Toolkit -Lido -Micronet Utility -SCSI Probe (hoped to mount empty volume, perhaps?) -Mt. Everything (same slim hope) I headed back to gamba in hopes of another likely-looking utility. Nothing seemed familiar or famous, so I picked the next most recent one, FormatterOne Pro. It recognized the drive, and told me that I'd need to format it before I could partition or install drivers. Fine. I clicked format and...it's been going for 50 minutes. The watch is spinning, so I figure that means it's just taking a long time for such a big drive. I had hoped to format HFS+, but I don't seem to have been given any choice by this FormatterOne, so HFS it is. Maybe next time... The advice I promised: Try this utility! I've uploaded it to the hotline server. Hah! Made you read my story! I win. Really my intent was to talk about this useful software, so I put it here, but if a mod so chooses I suppose I will understand if the post gets moved. Whatever, I still win. Unless my drive doesn't finish formatting... { candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 3} { My baby: Q660av }

In fact it didn't finish because I had to go to bed and that new drive turned out to be quite the noise-maker. I should go start it up again...{ candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 3} { My baby: Q660av } |

I have one of those flaky seagate drives that refused to format with anything. HDT said It had to do a low level format, and froze up. The hacked drive setup didn't even see the drive. I finally managed to get it working using APS PowerTools (CharisMac).Artillery Commander/Engineer, 68kMLA Liberated: LCII , III+, IIci, Q700, 800, and 840av, P550, 410 Contraband: Beige G3/300 MT o/c 400mhz, (2) 6100's Keeper of the 68kmla Hotline mirror server: 68k.dyndns.org

I think some sound advice is to not buy seagate drives. their IDE drives haven't given me any trouble though. Quantum has always been a reliable and compatible drive that has given me no problems. But it was so cheap! Update: I just checked the progress. It's been formatting for 12 hours...I don't think it's going to finish! Damn! I'll try one that worked with the seagate drive. Anyone know where to get it? Well, I'll poke around. { candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 3} { My baby: Q660av } Edited by - candypunk on 13 Aug 2002 19:15:41 |

If that's a Barracuda drive, forget it! It takes quite a bit of luck and fiddling around with the jumpers to get it "ready for initialization" on a PPC. As for a 68k, well... good luck.Besides, these drives are louder than the jackhammers used by the foremen across the street. Not to mention the heat generated can scald the cabinet of your system if not properly insulated.

Hey! my hotline server runs off of those things! (and that's why it's in the garage). The program I used to format the many flaky drives is on the mirror server-on a seagate barracuda. Jumper settings are on the seagate website, and make things a lot easier. I had a 2.1 seagate barracuda that was a real treat to play with. I agree with the above posts about the temperature!! That little drive got HOT, real hot. Luckily I acquired it with a usable format so all i did was erase the whole drive if i wanted to start over, but i was never able to format or initialize it. The temp scared me too much to leave in a server and i just gave it away for my friend to use in a 840av. I will note that i have a 40 gig barracuda IDE drive in my 8500 and it's amazing. It is completely silent, never had an error or anything. great drive. _______________________ Sgt. Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyye uuuuuuuPPPPPyes I have a 4.2 gig seagate barracuda. I bought mine off ebay & got great advice from the guy who sold it to me. He went on & on & on about termination. I ended up doing the termination on my 1.2 gig but still the drive wouldn't work. When I finally got it to work it took a couple of minutes to fromat(I'm sure I think). But playing around with scsi id did the trick. It seems that scsi itself is a bit "fiddly/tempremental" my drive is a seagate barracuda 4.23 gig. shaktiman Quadra 840av 128MB ram 2MB vram cd drive(caddy),1 caddy!:-)1.44 floppy drive,inject :-(1.2 gig drive 2 monitors 15" & 14" os 8.1 56k modem Stylewriter 1200 Zodiac speakers Umax 1220s scanner 3 year old son! |

Mine was a 4.2 gig barracuda. I think it might have been dead. Several utilities gave me a "Medium Error." I sent it back for a replacement. I've got jumper settings, but I can't make much of them. I figured out how to set the ID, but the rest is all greek to me. I hope none of it's too important. It all looked pretty technical. Does it need to be set in such a way to allow formatting? Nothing in the jumper info gave any clues about that, so I didn't investigate that aspect of the problem. Should I?{ candyPunk } { Captain of Observation, 68k MLA } { 68k Macs liberated: 3} { My baby: Q660av } |

No I dont think so.The jumper thing terrified me, I had my Quadra open & the hard drives open, but I just changed id & termination status. I was glad not to have to go any further. I can let the guy who sold me mine have your e-mail if you want, I can't promise anything but he was very knowledgable & helpful. shaktiman
