Sorry, can't help you, at least not with ObjC or Java. I don't know either. You might want to try AppleScript Studio to start out. IIRC, the docs for it came on the dev tools CD. It's really easy to learn, and with OS X, you can do useful things with it.

As for programming on 68k Macs, try Think Pascal. It's free now, and it has a really nice compiler and debugger.

I know how you feel. Underneath all the ease-of-use goodness of the Mac is a giant hairy octopus of all the APIs (Application Programmer Interfaces) for the GUI, filesystem, etc. I would start by learning how to write programs that are invoked from the shell (simple command-line programs that only do simple stuff like print out "Hello World" or list prime numbers or that remove all the vowels from a text file). That will help you learn how to use the software that helps you make software and will teach you basic programming.

Then, I would move on to learning how the user-interaction stuff works by finding an example bit of code that puts up a window and has a simple menu. Working with, understanding, and modifying someone else's code is a great introduction to writing software. This is where you have to learn all the APIs, how to handle the mouse, menus, windows, graphics, etc. There are a million little details to learn, so work steadily by adding one more little feature to your software.

Programming is easy to learn (especially creating software that takes advantage of a complex user interface). But it is extremely rewarding when your first bit of software runs, bug free, and does exactly what you want it to do!

Happy Coding,
