thought I'd get a faster modem for a performa 636 on ebay (to replace the $5 14k card from shreve's). it came today, plugged it in, threw the script into the appropiate folder, changed modem control panel... nada - ppp panel says no dial tone detected. it does power up and I switched the cable with one I had in case it was damaged, still nothing. so, am I just s**** outta luck or am I overlooking something simple, or is it possible it needs a driver or something... I searched for info on it to no avail, think it's one of those cheesy give-aways from earthlink. it's a 56kflex external, labeled 'performance' and on the bottom reads 'enterprise technologies'. it had been used on the seller's old mac, don't know what kind, but he said did work. (yeah, I know, of course he said that) thanks sosumi 68k macs liberated:3 |

I don't know what OS you're using, but a 33.6k GlobalVillage Platinum i got for my 650 worked without adding any special scripts. I just selected it in Mac OS 8's list of modems in the modem control panel try using it without the script? FireWire is fast General, 4 star Forum moderator 68k Macintosh Liberation Army |

oops, forgot the basic 'give all the info stupid' rule!running os 8 and the script for that modem isn't on the install disk, the seller sent it on a floppy. but, you just gave me a thought. I'll put the 'hayes basic' script in and see if that works. if not, I'll try without the scripts. let you know, thanks! sosumi 68k macs liberated:3 |

You don't need any special drivers for modems in the MacOS, which is just a beautiful thing. What I suggest is get a hold of a terminal program to diagnose the modem. You'll want to use the following commands as they appear:ATZ <hit return> (this should "wake-up" the modem and give a response of "OK") AT&F <hit return> (this is a fairly generic modem reset to get it back to factory settings, it works wonders with almost ANY modem out there, and you may even want to add it to the script as an init string. oh yeah, and it should come back as "OK") ATI-3 <hit return> ATI-5 <hit return> (at least one of these should give the actual modem manufacturer and model, which if nothing else should be helpful in the future) After doing this, try using PPP to connect again. If it still fails, trash and replace PPP and TCP/IP just to rule out an OS corruption and point to the modem being a 'tard. Oh one more thing, upgrade to OS 8.1! It has a much better version of OpenTransport and TCP/IP. Since you don't seem to have broadband access, email me and maybe I can help you out.Lieutenant EL CINE, 666th poster to the 68K Macintosh Liberation Army Forums Master of the Mac II series forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 4 |

cinemafiathanks for the info per your suggestion, I tried both z-term and claris on it, aside from the initial ok, no go. but I must admit I may not be thinking too clearly right now, birthday last night you see, so I'll give it another shot tomorrow. possibly try it on the other performa or the powerbook, of course they don't currently have op/trans, I have been meaning to do that<sigh> the ppp and tcp/ip is working fine with the old 14k card, so that's most likely not the problem. sheesh, I'm getting sick of pulling it to test the new one. as for 8.1, I'm fairly sure this particular mac (636cd) will only run up to 8.0, at least that's what my copy of the spec database (9-98) says. thanks again sue hey, 666, that's my lucky number sosumi 68k macs liberated:3 Edited by - sosumi on 08 Dec 2001 00:22:04 |

It will run 8.1If the spec database says upto 7.5.5, it will go to 7.6.1 If it says 8.5, it will do 8.6. Ahh... the beauty of Apple upgrades... ------------------ Captain Z - Sniper 68K Macintosh Liberation Army 17 68K Macs Liberated |

Yeah, anything with an 040 will run 8.1. Trust me, it's much better than 8.0.666th poster to the 68K Macintosh Liberation Army Forums Mod of the Mac II series Forums Total 68K Macs liberated: 4 |

assuming you have enough RAM...i think the minimum is 16...i'd reccomend 64 if you're doing lots of multitasking
