Excellent deal -- just a bit over a penny per megahertz. Congratulations!

Great find! Have fun trying to get the damned things open, though. The 6400 Zone has good instructions about how to pop off the front panel with a split-apart clothespin. If the 6400 has an empty drive bay (where the Zip would go), make a cardboard drive mount, throw an old SCSI drive in there, and put Linux on the drive. And if you haven't already, get rid of the Geoport modem in the 6400. IIRC, the modem in the 6500 isn't too bad. Of course, any CS II ethernet cards are worth keeping.

Well, they're both up-and-running, but I've only got one working IDE drive between them- the old stock one from the 6500 was semi-dead (it spins up, and then spins down).
I just finished installing OS 9.1 on the 6500... damn, I should'a grabbed one of those Apple 17" screens.... sigh. Too much good gear, not enough money...

HmmmmmmMMMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...our school have 3 iMac 350s in the music department that are never used. There are rumors going around that they are planning to get rid of them. I wonder how much they'll let one go for....

Hey, your best bet is to let some of the admin staff know that you're interested in them now- don't wait till they're up for grabs, 'cause one of the staff might hold on to 'em.
Good luck!

Okay, folks, now that I've confirmed that both of these systems are working fine, I'm wondering what to do with 'em!
I'm thinking about selling one (prob. the 6400), but any ideas on what I could use the 6500 for?
What upgrade path should I take. I'm already planing to invest in a (much!) bigger HDD, and I'm gonna max out the RAM, but past that, what should I do? I imagine a new(er) video card would be a good speed boost- which one do you recomend?
Lastly, while it's currently running OS 9.1 very nicely, this seems like the perfect system to play around w/ different OS's on... like BeOS, or Linux, etc. In fact, on the 6400's drive (which is now in the 6500) it had Yello Dog Linux on it, but it wouldn't run (it seemed to be an installer).
So, any ideas are more then welcome.
Thanks!
:-)

You can also have lots of fun with the A/V cards with it. Not having to be video editing, but u can do some pretty weird hookups between VCR's, TV's Monitors, etc. (If ur into that kidna thing, i dunno)...

There is only one path and that is the path that you take, but you can take more than one path.

The 6500 has onboard ATI accelerated video (3D Rage II+), so a video card might not be worth it. However, USB cards are cheap and useful. It will run Linux well, but I don't know if BeOS would like the onboard video. You'll have to try it.

Thanks for the tip!
I'm looking forward to trying BeOS- according to the pages I've read, it should work okay... I think... Now my only problem is finding BeOS! I seem to remember something about it being on the MLA hotline server- is it still there?
On another note, from what I can tell, my 6400 and 6500 are missing the TV/FM tuner card- at least, I don't see anything that looks like such a card on the mobo when I slide it out. If it is there, what would I be looking for, and where? IIRC, the 6500 has both S-video in and out ports, along with (I presume) stereo RCA plugs for sound in-out. Would the TV card be related to these parts?
Finally, assuming I don't have the TV card- does anyone out there have one to spare/trade/sell/donate? I don't really neeeeed one, but it'd be sooooooo cool to be watching TV on this bad-ass computer!
Thanks, folks!

Well, I found some jumpers and tried using the drive that came in the 6500, but no dice- it still spins up, spins down, and that's it.
To make matters worse, I tried adding the 32-meg DIMM from the 6400, but now the 6500 won't boot at all- I get a chime, and then a grey screen with mouse curser- what you'd normally see right before the 'Happy Face' takes over. Arrrgh! I've tried removing the new RAM, but it's doing the same thing! Did I kill it?! I was being careful about static electricity.... I think.....

The 6500 will only take EDO DRAM, whereas the 6400 will take either EDO or FPM DRAM. You probably tried to put a stick of FPM DRAM in the 6400.

Try resetting the motherboard. Disconnect the battery and hold down the reset button for a few seconds. You might also want to zap the PRAM.

This has been an interesting morning...
I went to bed (finally!) at about 2:30am, burnt out and frusterated, not knowing why the damn thing wasn't working. As has happened on several other occasions, the answer came to me in a dream!
I dreamed that I was driving a car down a long, flat road out in the desert. Suddenly, I noticed a police car right behind me, and I was pulled over. The cop asked me to get out of the car, which I did, and then he says "your zipper is broken- let me see your ID". I look down, and, sure enough, the zipper on my pants is messed up, so I start digging around in my pockets, looking for my ID. While I'm doing this, the cop is looking in the car, and he tells me "man, this car sure is scuzzy! It's the scuzziest car I've seen today"
At this point I think I woke up, but the dream kept playing back in my head- ...scuzzy.......ID.......zipper.....ZIPer.....
I sat straight up, almost smashing my head on my shelf, when it finally hit me: The Zip drive's SCSI ID!
Sure enough, jumper that I'd borrowed from the Zip drive (to test that dead hard drive) had fallen out of the jumper block, giving it the same SCSI ID as (I presume) the CD-ROM drive, which prevented the darn thing from booting! I switched the Zip's SCSI ID, put the RAM from the 6400 in there, fired it up, and ***Presto!*** it boots fine, passes all the Norton Info checks, and everything is now peachy-keen!
Ahhhh, the power of dreams...

Well at least the dreams you learn stuff from aren't sexually oriented.

Otoh, a couple of nights ago i had a dream about swapping the PSUs in those two G3s and getting one to work.
